Thank you to all for being extremely helpful and friendly. Great breakfast. Spacious room with all facilities. We had a lovely two-night stay.

Tips:

Great location right on the bay (hence being The Bayview!) with tables/chairs at the front to sit and take in the views. Short walk into Rothesay. Own parking.

Wonderful experience at the Bayview. Very attentive owners who have thought of everything for guests. A great setting with amazing sea view. Delicious breakfast (including vegetarian options) in a lovely dining area. I look forward to returning and will be recommending the Bayview to friends. (Very happy with the No Pets policy - this helps guests who may be allergic or afraid of dogs - thank you).

Tips:

Local eating places have varied opening times so always best to book in advance. I discovered Harry Haw's just off the Harbour - superb little eating place. Would also recommend going into the Pavillion on the Harbour which houses "Visit Scotland" - they will give you lots of advice on what to see and do and give you a street map etc. I was very impressed with Bute and Rothesay itself.

Always friendly, pleasant and helpful

Tips:

Mount Stuart House and gardens was wonderful. Took a whole day and still could have spent more time there. Local taxis were fantastic; so quick to respond, reliable and helpful. The Bonnie Clyde looks uninspired from outside - but food over 2 visits was excellent and different! Small cafe at Ettrick Bay has a great menu and lots to see and do - whatever the weather.

2nd August 2022:

The room was very clean and had plenty of amenities. Kettle, TV, hairdryer etc ... The owners were very welcoming and the breakfasts were amazing (plenty of choice). The hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from town and there's plenty of parking at the front of the building. Do choose your room carefully if you have mobility challenges, we were in the loft room and the stairs are pretty steep.

Tips:

We ate at the Black Bull and Esplanade Hotel, the food was great at both. I definitely recommend visiting Mount Stuart. The building is incredible inside and out.I also enjoyed visiting the boutique shops in Rothersay, nice to get away from the chain stores. The ferry service from Weymss bay and back was really quick and easy. All in all, a really good relaxing weekend break.

Irene and Andrew are a lovely, friendly couple who aim to please all their guests. The hotel is exactly as described by other guests. Our room was immaculate, very spacious with fantastic views over the sea. The reclining chairs were very comfortable and great for relaxing in after a day's sight seeing. The breakfasts were extremely tasty.

Tips:

Recommend eating at the Ghillies restaurant at lunch time or the Esplanade Hotel in the evening. It's owned by the same company but opened at different times. Make sure you book in advance as it is in high demand especially on a Monday and Tuesday as other restaurants are closed.

Excellent service and a warm and friendly welcome from Irene and Andrew, who also have an extensive knowledge of the island and its attractions. Perfect location on seafront with beautiful views: peaceful, and a pleasant stroll (about 10 minutes) from harbour area. Very good value.

Tips:

Mount Stuart is an obvious destination. Even if you aren't visiting the house the vast and beautifully maintained grounds are worth a visit on their own. The ruins of St Blane's church in the south of Bute are also worth a trip. There is a bit of an incline on the pathway accessing it but nothing severe. A nice outlook from the church site also. For eating close to the Bayview, the nearby Glenburn Hotel is a good location for lunch or dinner on the terrace, weather permitting.

The Bayview is a lovely hotel ideally located just a casual stroll from the ferry ! We stayed in a lovely suite on the second floor with the most stunning view of the bay ! I could have spent my whole time just looking out the windows! Everything really clean and comfortable. After a very warm welcome check in was very easy. I have no problem in recommending this hotel we had a lovely stay 👍👍

Tips:

I would recommend booking in advance for any restaurant you would like to eat at we arrived Saturday afternoon and could find no places available for Saturday night for dinner only managing to get a last minute booking for the Sunday! There aren’t many places to eat in Rothesay so plan in advance ! We ate at the Bonnie Clyde on the Sunday snd had a lovely meal there !!

We have just returned from a very pleasant few days at the Bayview. We had read the reviews before booking and had high expectations. Safe to say, we were not disappointed. It was everything we expected and much more. The bedding and towels were of extremely good quality, everywhere was spotless, the Covid precautions were excellent and not intrusive, the breakfasts were perfection itself, as were the hospitality snd service provided by Irene and Andrew. A lovely couple and a great team. There are many more things I haven’t mentioned, but all the added touches provided just enhanced our stay. We cannot recommend the Bayview highly enough. 21st June 2021:

Very kind and attentive hosts. Irene is a fount of knowledge about the beautiful island of Bute and the best experiences for a short stay. The location couldn't be better with fabulous views and a short walk into the centre of town and the ferry. The breakfasts were the best on our trip; the fruit salad, porridge and the general quality of food were far better here. As indeed were the comfort and facilities of our room; bed, coffee machine and easy chairs especially. Sitting on the front terrace in the evening with a Bute gin and tonic, taking in the sea air and sounds of birds, and watching the ever changing view, was the perfect end to perfect days.

Tips:

Easy walk across the island from Port Bannatyne to Ettrick Bay, and you can get to Port Bannatyne by bus or another easy walk. Cafe and toilets at both ends. Loch Fad is another easy walk from centre of town; or up the Serpentine Road (beats San Franscico's) and over the hill or through the community wood. Every walk allows different beautiful views of Bute and the surrounding landscape and other islands. Buses seem to cover the whole road system. Local restaurants and cafes are good. The architecture is predominantly fine Victorian residences. Some ancient standing stones and churches dating back to the first Christians and a few castles add interest. 14th June 2021:

Very friendly and welcoming host made us feel comfortable straight away. We stayed in room no. 5 which was very spacious with fantastic triple window views over the beautiful bay. Clean room, good parking, great location and well cooked breakfast with good selection to choose from. Just a great trip for us, I couldn’t be more positive in my praise for the Bayview and for Bute as a whole

Tips:

Booking ahead for evening meals would be useful! The choice of restaurants means they book up fast, particularly during COVID-19 restrictions. The honkey Tonk diner was clean, welcoming and fun! And the black bull served a nice evening meal too. Traditional pub food. Make time to visit mount stuart and take a walk along ettrick bays beautiful shore line. Explore the island and enjoy the stunning views!

The Bayview is a 15 minute walk from the centre of town, but it's a beautiful walk, along the promenade, overlooking the sea. The rooms were spacious, breakfast superb and staff very helpful

Tips:

Recommend the museum (£4), which is small but interesting and varied. Restaurant-wise, many were closed, but we had good meals at the Esplanade Hotel and the Black Bull, both on the seafront road. Harry Haws was recommended, but we could not get a table. We found it difficult to find any cafes outside Rothesay and Port Bannatyne, apart from a lovely cafe at Kilchatten Bay. The hotel at Kingarth was closed due to bereavement, but will open soon, presumably. Bute is great for cycling, with no major hills - a welcome change. Although almost all the roads ar "A-roads", they are not busy at all. Bute can be comfortably toured in 2 days by bike.

Working away quietly and unobtrusively, and to great effect, to ensure safety and security for all guests. Generous space in room accommodation. Excellent breakfast fare. Challenges of current pandemic have been fully taken account of in delivering the best experience during these uncertain times. The 4-star status accorded to the Bayview is well and truly deserved. Value for money is unbeatable.

Tips:

Bayview provides a useful list of nearby restaurant facilities, providing a collective cuisine that caters for all preferences. Worth mentioning the Tearoom in Ettrick Bay looking directly onto the shore - extremely popular among visitors and provides a comprehensive menu, from a snack to a full-scale dinner. Carry-out service is especially popular. Many attractive tourist spots are, unfortunately, on hold during the pandemic (and in particular, the magnificent Mount Stuart mansion with its extensive landscaped and wild gardens). That said, the tourists flock to the island to enjoy the beaches on both sides of the island, or to take in the bracing sea air in a walk round the esplanade and the expansive paths and flower-drenche areas overlooking the sea front. The Victorian Toilets, Rothesay Castle and the superb Bute Museum are a must for the tourist. An open-top double decker bus provides regular tours round the entire island.

Try to get around the island as much as possible, visit the information centre in Rothesay for guidance. The Jam Jar restaurant/ coffee shop up Canada Hill is excellent. Our visit to Mount Stuart was disappointing as a coach load of tourists arrived just after us and the advertised 12:30 tour had been cancelled meaning a one and a half hour wait. It is a great place to visit and enjoy, just ensure you time it well. Several small coffee shops in Rothesay are worth a visit, check them out. Also the Bute art gallery shop. Our meal at the Esplanade Hotel was overpriced and basic, however the view and people watching was most enjoyable.

10th August 2019:

From the outside The Baview appears to be a very modest hotel. Looks can be decieving. Located in the most stunning place, it is easy accessed from all roads and by foot from the nearby ferry terminal. The owners were consistently fantastic throughout my stay. They both had a very keen eye for detail regrading the needs of their guests. Parking is provided at the front of the hotel. A terrace with ample tables, seating and umbrella shade is a wonderful area of the hotel for relaxing. The interior of the hotel is light and spacious. A lounge is available for all guests to share. Board games are available. I had a single room with a private bathroom. The room was bigger than some doubles I have stayed in recently. My bed was very comfortable with a mattress of the orthopedic type. The booking form said 'Sea View', I was not disappointed. I had a live and wonderful 24 hour view onto Rothesay Bay. I spent a lot of my time in the mornings drinking the complimentary tea and coffee whilst watching the sailing boats and ferries. My bathroom, although not attached to my bedroom, was fabulous. A generous space with a fantastic shower. Toiletries are also provided. Breakfast is served in a very civilised dining room with table service. A buffet of cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt and fruit juices is provided. My cooked breakfast was cooked to order on both mornings. It was a generous plate of food cooked to perfection. Tea and Coffee is served in individual pots. Nothing in the Bayview Hotel is rushed. The quality of service, food, cleanliness, room facilities, decor, exterior amenities etc are all there for guests to enjoy in their own time. Andrew and Irene work tirelessly to provide a home from home for all guests. Their shared focus is 'Come in as a stranger.... leave as a friend'. I loved my stay and I will be returning very soon.

Tips:

Take a walk out the front door and you will find that everything and everywhere on the Island of Bute is easily accessed from The Bayview Hotel. Irene can provide guests with a promotion code which allows a reduced price entry to Mount Stuart.

Third visit to the Bayview as it is just a lovely place to stay. Pick a room to the front as the view is to die for. Rooms are well furnished, the complementary toiletries are high quality, and the beds are roomy and gloriously firm. I always get a good night's sleep. The breakfasts are freshly cooked and delicious and the host is so helpful. Can't recommend this place enough.

Tips:

A trip to Mount Stuart is a must (if you are staying at the Bayview you can get a discount) and eat at Harry Haws. If you like cheesecake then the Ettrick Bay tearoom is for you. There is a fairly new tea room, Caledonia, in Port Bannatyne which caters for gluten free - worth checking out.

Our booking was for sea view suite on top floor.[ bedroom + lounge area]. Climb up two flights of stairs to get there but well worth it for excellent view across Rothesay Bay. We could watch ferry and other boats coming and going. Very clean apartment, good breakfast and very friendly service.

Tips:

Good local restaurant - Harry Haws. Also Kettledrum Café Bistro. Latter is only open up to 5pm. Mount Stuart House and grounds [about 8 miles south of Rothesay is a great day out . If you like beach walks, Ettrick Bay, Kilchattan Bay, and Scalpsie Bay are excellent. At Scalpsie we got the chance to do some seal watching.

Friendly family run business. Nice clean room with fab view across the Bay. I had single room with my own private bathroom just a few feet down the corridor. They provide a robe so you can transit between room and bathroom. Breakfast was a mix of cereal, fruit, yougout etc plus full Scottish breakfast. All freshly cooked. It’s only a short walk to town so accessible for shops and only a 3 minute drive from the Ferry.

Tips:

I was there a very short time but eat in Black Bull. Food was very good, freshly caught fish was lovely and nice big portion too. If the weather is good then you are spoiled for walks and cycling. It’s only 26 miles around the Island so great for outdoors types.

A friendly, clean B&B offering a fantastic view of the bay at Rothesay and distant hills. Our (two) rooms were clean, nicely decorated and warm. There was a shower over the bath, toiletries were provided and there was plenty of hot water. We couldn't fault breakfast - it was a treat. Starting with fruit and yoghurt, then cereal all followed by wonderfully cooked bacon and eggs etc. I would definitely stay again and highly recommend. (I've selected '4' for facilities, as I prefer a separate shower.)

Tips:

Kingarth Hotel (the only country pub on the Isle of Bute) is definitely worth a visit. Our party enjoyed three excellent meals. The servings were large which meant I couldn't manage 3 courses! A must see is Mount Stuart and gardens a short drive from Rothesay. If you're into history, St Blane's Church is well worth the short climb up the hill to it's location, and there are spectacular views from the top. Rothesay Castle, the Bute Museum and Visit Scotland Centre were also very interesting. Bute is definitely a bute-ful island!

We were welcomed as we arrived, all questioned answered which was most helpful and we found both the owners and the accommodation superb ! Our 4 poster bedroom was huge with beautiful views over Rothesay Bay and the Loch. This hotel is spotlessly clean and to a very high standard and my husband and myself travel extensively across the world and have sometimes seen the difference. Breakfast excellent too and served with a sunny smile.

Tips:

Enjoy your Rothesay holiday, it's a beautiful Island with very friendly people who want you to enjoy yourself and who are interested in where you have travelled from. The Fair was on the sea front when we holidayed and it was great to enjoy rides we'd thought we would never go on again ! It's the only place I know that serves brilliant Top Hat Ice cream. It's to die for. Thanks Mr Zavaroni. We visit Mount Stuart House and St Blanes chapel on each visit back to the Island. We looked out for dolphins in Kilchattan Bay, Orcas and Basking Sharks and they're all visitors to Bute too but we weren't lucky this time. The Waverley Paddle Boat did make a visit as did a Cruise liner too. A walk along Lovers Walk in the Meadows brought back memories too, of bygone years. Ettrick Bay tearooms provided wonderful lunches as did the tea rooms in Montague Street who provided a very tasty sliced sausage and potato scone filled roll which brought back teenage memories, of when we stopped there after the dances in the Pavillion for a roll on the way home to bed. Rothesay is the most wonderful place. It made an article in the Guardian Newspaper recently about most of what I have said and I totally agree. Travelling home on the CalMac ferry was as nice as it always is but I hope to return me and mine and will diffinately recommend the Bayview Hotel to all of my friends and family. It's a superb hotel to stay in.

Irene and her staff were very helpful and friendly. The Bayview rooms are very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. We all had a really good night's sleep. I would highly recommend the Bayview. The view from our room was like a picture postcard. Thank you once again for a great stay

Tips:

We all enjoyed a well presented and delicious meal upstairs in the Victoria. I'd recommend a trip on the tour bus to anyone who hasn't been to Rothesay before as it is a good opportunity to see more of this beautiful island.

Lovely stay at the Bay View. Well appointed, not far from the town or ferry but far enough to be very quiet. The room was decorated beautifully. Clean and had all the facilities and amenities you would expect or want. The bathroom was not ensuite, but private to me (I knew this before booking so not unexpected) AND a bathrobe was provided Just the job! And to top it all the view from my room was exceptional

My second visit to Bayview and once again had a great trip. The view of Loch Striven from my room alone was worth the trip. But equally stunning was the freshly cooked breakfast and the warm welcome you get from the great hosts who run it. The guest lounge is great too and the relaxed atmosphere just helps you unwind. It's a pleasant 10 minute walk along the shoreline into Rothesay and the main bus route on the island stops almost outside hotel. All in all a real gem of a place, I can't wait to go back!

Tips:

We were offered a sea view room when we arrived as one was available but decided to keep with the garden view. It was a very spacious room with a very comfy extra large bed.It also had a sofa small writing table large wardrobe and drawers for clothes. The shower had great pressure and was hot due to having its own electric heater so did not run out of hot water. Irene and Andy were the perfect hosts. Irene handled the guests while Andy was in the kitchen cooking up very tasty full breakfasts to your liking. We also received a discounted entry to the Mount Stuart House by purchasing our tickets at the hotel. We will definitely make this our place to stay when we return to the Island again.

Tips:

We had two lovely fresh fish meals at the Victoria Hotel in the town centre. I definitely recommend going to Mount Stuart House. Tips:

Beautiful island, we were most impressed with the fearnery which is so nice layed out and offers so many little places with stunning views, a real gem. Mount Stuart gardens disappointed us a bit as we expected flowers but only found beautiful trees. The house itself is with any right one of the most impressive ones we ever visited. Best and for us only restaurant in Rothesay is Harry Haws with very tasty good dishes and friendly young staff. We were shocked about Victoria hotels restaurant at first floor with its dated rooms and decoration. Fish with chilli batter was like leather and Sea Bass on a bed of lemon dressing missed the dressing. Black Bull is a nice little pub if you want to go for a real ale.

Received a lovely welcome, got shown to our room which you don’t see most of the time anywhere else. The room was out of this world, had a great view of the sea watching the boats and ships alike. Didn’t have to wait long for breakfast, which we did enjoy every morning. Would we be back again, yes we would, the price was just right.

Tips:

There are so many places to see and eat. One place that we liked to eat in at was called the Esplande Hotel, you can’t miss it, it’s right across from where you come of the Rothesay ferry. The battered fish just melts in your mouth. If you have a family the price is just right for your pocket.

Bayview is an excellent place to stay on Bute. The rooms are comfortable and well-furnished, the welcome is very friendly and helpful, and there is a first-class breakfast. The single rooms are not ensuite, but each has its own exclusive, well-equipped and spacious private bathroom down the corridor (bathrobes are provided for transit)

Tips:

Bayview is a little way out of town, but within a reasonable walk, and the local bus service is quite good. The architecture of Rothesay gives delightful example of Victorian opulence and elegance. Things to see include Mount Stewart, one of Britain's great country houses, and (do not miss!) the fernery and gardens at Ascog. The countryside offers plenty of scope for walking, and there are good beaches.

20th September 2015:

My first stay in Rothesay. I had reviewed several hotels and was pleased that I chose the Bayview. It is a small family run hotel. If you are looking for ultra modern this isn't the one to choose. This traditional Scottish hotel is very comfortable and the views out to sea are the very best. You can watch the ferry and small fishing boats go by. The breakfast choice is excellent with lots of different cereals, fruit salad, fruit juices marmalade, Nutella. The full Scottish breakfast is the best I have tasted. How do you get that perfect poached egg? The bacon etc fat free (sausages from local butcher) Andrew is the chef and works away in the background and Irene is front of house. The atmosphere is calm so if you have insomnia book yourself in for a good sleep. I like to write reviews because I appreciate being able to look at the comments of other travellers when making a choice.

Tips:

If you are loooking for a mad whirl of things to do Rothesay isn't the place. If you are looking to relax and enjoy being on a beautiful small island then this is the place. Having said that people travel from the mainland to play golf. The island hosts a jazz festival 29th April to 2nd May (www.butejazz.com) The Bute Festival of Cycling 19th-20th September called the 'September Weekend' in the 1950s ( www.rothesayweekend.co.uk) was getting underway as I left the island yesterday with lots of races planned. Whenever I mentioned going to Rothesay everyone recommended Mount Stuart which is part of the Bute Estate and described as 'The spirit of nineteenth-century invention is embodied in Mount Stuart – a feat of Victorian engineering, this neo-gothic mansion was one of the most technologically advanced houses of its age The gardens are beautiful. Dates 29 March – 4 October 2015 Mon, Tue, Thur Guided tours hourly: 11.30am - 3.30pm Mount Stuart is easily accessed by local bus which drops you off in the grounds * The walk from this point to the house is fine if you are feeling fit. The alternative is to wait for the small minibus which runs constantly. There are tearooms at entry point and at the house. Ascog Hall Gardens and Victorian Fernery is also worth a visit Open from 10am to 5pm 1st April to 30th October. Described as a very well stocked garden together with a fine sunken Victorian Fernery and large stable's ruin. All located in the grounds of a fine baronial style house; house built around 1840, Fernery 1875. A distinctly old fashioned and rather magical experience. Teas and coffees available according to weather. Lastly Ettrick Bay is a beautiful bay with lots of seabirds birdseyeviewofbute.co.uk There is a tearoom which does an excellent cappuccino and toffee meringue

We went to Ettrick Bay, Mount Stuart, Kilchattan and Rhubadoch, climbed the Serpentine in Rothesay where in olden days people used to go to watch their families sail off to Canada. This was our second visit to the Bayview Hotel. The rooms are spotless and the landlady has thought of and provided everything us girls need in the downstairs loo. The breakfast is excellent and gives you a great start to your day. In the words of a certain hunky famous actor "I will be back"

Tips:

A must do while on The Isle of Bute is Mount Stuart. I don't "do" buildings but on our landladys advice as we were leaving on our last stay with her she recommended that it was worth a visit. I am now a convert. I have never seen anything like it. We went on a day without organised tours but the room guides are so enthusiastic it made the whole experience even more of a pleasure. My only criticism was thatntherebwere no fridge magnets to add to my collection but that is a small price to pay for so much pleasure.

We really enjoyed our three day stay, Bute is a beautiful Isle. The Hotel is very well situated being near to the centre, the panoramic view from our room was one of the best views we have had on holiday. Plenty of good food for breakfast, a B & B which does serve an evening meal (on certain nights)the meal was delicious. The owners made us feel very welcome.

Tips:

There is plenty to see in Bute, we drove round the Isle but could have easily caught the bus (very frequent)Plenty of walking and a visit to Mount Stuart House is a must you will never see a house like it,it is unique.

We want to send you a hearty thank you. The weather was cold but the hotel was warm, wonderful and such a perfect view for us land-locked folks. The food was tremendous. Fresh and filling, well presented. We want to return as soon as we can. Totally loved our two days. The four poster bedroom was superb. We will remember Bute long after London and Paris.

Tips:

This seems to be an unusually cold season for the isles. Go anyway. We were enchanted by the scenery; the people were so nice. We thought of eating in the restaurants but Bayview meals were too good. Andrew, the husband, is the cook. I left wishing we had a cookbook of his meals. It was our first visit to Scotland and if we sound overly enthusiastic, I apologize. WE LOVED BUTE and Bayview. Get the 4-poster bedroom.

Tips:

Victorian Toilets are worth the small charge for a look. Black Bull Inn was very good for real ale and very friendly. Both Harry Haw's and Waterfront Bistros lived up to expectation. Mount Stewart is best visited in sunshine - don't go to see the House on a rainy day as the rooms benefit from the sun streaking in through stained glass windows, and the gardens are huge with not many places to shelter from the rain.

Very welcoming and understandable when we checked in late because of ferry crossing. Breakfast was excellent and served without delay. Irene gave us sandwiches and fruit on our departure for our early ferry crossing to Weymess Bay which was very much appreciated as we had to depart before breakfast. All in all lovely, clean Hotel with excellent service.

Tips:

Do not leave Isle of Bute without a visit to The Golfers bar near the pier. To say Tommy is an excellent batman is an understatement. He welcomed us in over the weekend and always with a smile on his face, he even entertained us throughout the night with his excellent voice and seemed to pick the song to suit the atmosphere. He even serenaded the young married couple with an appropriate song. Well done Tommy! The Waterfront is a good restaurant for dinner - plenty of choice although the portions are on the large side. We did the northern loop of the West Island way which needs improved signage. We took the local sight seeing bus around the island. You can get off at any point and get the next one at any point. Mount Stuart is a must see place if you don't have time for anything else. Wonderful house and extensive grounds down to the shoreline.

1st June 2014:

I chose the room online and was not disappointed. It turned out exactly as I had expected, a lovely room at the front with a fabulous view of the bay and the mountains, especially in the evening. The staff were very helpful, finding places to eat, how to store luggage at the ferry terminal etc.

Tips:

Rothesay is a good place for a short break even if you don't come by car. The fast transport links to Glasgow make it accessible from all parts of the UK and there are buses going somewhere on the island every day of the week. Storing luggage at the ferry terminal was cheap (£1 per bag) and efficient and I would definitely do that before checking in and after checking out. The best eating places that we found were the West End Cafe for fish and chips and Harry Haws for something more sophisticated. We went to the Black Bull for real ale. All 3 are very close to the ferry terminal. Picture Bute Tartan Shop with the kilted dummy outside (just opposite the terminal and next to the Black Bull) sold good value tartan and Harris Tweed goods.

The owners, Irene and Andrew are very friendly and are always available for any questions you may have.Nothing seems too much of a bother for them.

Tips:

Blethers and Zavaroni's are good for meals. Most pubs also sell bar meals.A new diner opened just up from the Bayview called Pier at Craigmore which looks well worth a visit. Lots to do and see in Rothesay.Mount Stuart House is a must. There is also The Castle, The Museum and The Bute Discovery Centre all worth visiting and who can resist a game of putting right on the sea front.

Lovely location. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful and gave good recommendations for where to eat and drink locally.

Tips:

Try the Bistro in town for excellent food, if rather massive portions that will no doubt defeat all but the heartiest of eaters. We were cycle touring round the island and stopped off at the cafe at Ettrick bay for a coffee, a fairly old fashioned but charming cafe with friendly staff and a great view across the beach to Arran and the Mull of Kintyre.

This is a Champions League venue which scores top marks on all fronts. We were making our first return visit to the Bayview since 1982 when it was run by Irene's parents. The same high standards, which were evident 31 years ago, still apply today. Outstanding value with home cooking to be savoured.

We lunched in Ghillie's Bistro in the Victoria Hotel. An excellent menu with very reasonable prices.

A gem of a hotel. The staff, facilities, location and food well exceeded our expectations. I will definitely return here and refer this hotel to family and friends. Its easy to see that the owners, Irene and Andrew have worked hard over the years and take customer satisfaction and comfort seriously. The view from the front of the hotel is amazing.

Tips:

Visit; the Castle, Scalpsie for the seals, Ettrick Bay, Port Bannatyne, Mount Stuart Estate, the coastal walks and many of the great little pubs on the island. Plenty to do from relaxing, fishing, cycling, coastal walks and entertainment. The Jade Gardens is a cracking little Chinese Restaurant. Bute is a beautiful and friendly island and within easy reach from the mainland.

Fantastic location, 5 minute walk from local shops and restaurants. Lovely big room, clean, fresh and a friendly warm welcome at a fantastic price. Delicious cooked breakfast with the option of evening meals. Easy access bicycle storage at the back. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Bay View and would definitely stay again.

Tips:

Dinner at Jade Garden is a must for the best Chinese food you will have tasted. A wee bite at the squat lobster on the front is recommended too. We took our own bikes but you can hire some from a shop in town for a fantastic way to see Bute on relatively flat and easy runs.
