We had a lovely stay and enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the owners. The food was incredible. Our only comment is that the bathroom lighting could use an update. But we would still highly recommend Glenegedale House if you're visiting Islay!

22nd January 2024:

We traveled across Scotland for over 3 weeks, and Glenegedale was our favorite stay! Thank you, Emma and Graeme, for giving us the most beautiful memories that will last for our lifetimes. Your pre-arrival communications assured us our upcoming stay was in the best hands…and upon arriving, we were immediately impressed by your outstanding accommodations, the presentation and deliciousness of each meal, and your Islay insights for all our local day trips…simply, world class! Glenegedale House is such a cozy, inviting house, exceptionally well-appointed throughout, including the wonderful bedrooms that inspired us with a sense of tranquility. You are both excellent chefs and each meal was a culinary masterpiece. Thank you for incorporating fresh-caught seafood, other local foods, and Islay’s amber elixirs into an amazing experience. Your knowledge of Islay and your relationships across the island, also added to our visits to historic sites, distilleries, and craft shops. You’ve given us a much better appreciation for the island and the people of Islay. This was an extraordinary experience. We give Glenegedale House our highest recommendation and will definitely be back to see you as soon as possible.

Tips:

Be prepared to enjoy a wonderful experience, where Glenegedale provides an Islay home away from home. Glenegedale will accentuate the stunning natural beauty of Islay, and Graham and Emma make each guest feel extra special. Graham has a special Islay porridge you must try. And, you’ll also want to see about getting the seafood platter that included scallops someone on Islay might dive for that day... Also, take advantage of their vast knowledge of all Islay has to offer. Their insights and recommendations paid big dividends for our day trips.

The rooms and house are stunning, really comfortable and spacious. The breakfast (which is included!!) is out of this world delicious and filling. I hope we have an opportunity to stay again, it felt like a home away from home.

Such a welcoming and well run place to stay. Lovely comfortable rooms, exceptional food....breakfast is a hilight of the day and the seafood platter (pre order only) is an experience not to be missed. Great location. Fantastic hosts with such a depth of knowledge about the island it was easy to decide what to do each day whether walking, sightseeing or distillery visiting.

We were thrilled to stay at the Glenegedale House for 5 nights. It exceeded our expectations from beginning to end. The breakfast menu was amazing and the evening meal options were also incredible. The quality and care that went into preparing the food was impeccable and service fantastic. Overall there was a wonderful sense of calm at the House and the hospitality had just the right balance of feeling cared for, and also being left alone. The hosts were there when we needed them and subtle in their presence when we just wanted to be quiet and stare out the window. We felt 'at home'. It was an exceptionally hot week on Islay so the only thing we could have used would be a fan (I guess we never asked). Thank you for the stay; the memories will last forever.

I am grateful for all the tips and advice (and fascinating stories!!) which made a big difference to the overall experience at Islay. You were attentive yet not overbearing, it was very much like home from home which I loved and I felt relaxed and welcomed immediately. The food was the best I have tasted for a long time, the seafood platter an absolute highlight for us all. Katia' and Chris recommended this location and will be visiting again soon.

Tips:

Absolutely wake up for breakfast. The porridge w/ fresh fruit, brown sugar, cream and a splash of Laphroaig along with other freshly prepared offerings (Poached egg, smoked salmon, hollandaise over crisp toast..) are just what is required to begin your day on Islay. Staying at Glenegedale House was by far the best accommodation we have ever stayed at. The location was idyllic, the house is beautiful, Graeme's porridge is the best in town, and every meal was delicious! Both Emma and Graeme were very welcoming and very knowledgeable about Islay and whisky. Don't miss out on staying at Glenegedale House!

13th April 2023:

We spent a wonderful long weekend on Islay enjoying the local culture, nature and produce, as well as some great hospitality from Emma and Graeme at Glenegedale House. The house is a comfy and relaxed place to stay with really outstanding breakfasts and evening meals featuring local and regional produce, perfectly cooked and presented. Our bedroom and ensuite was compact - in a cosy farmhouse sort of way - with a good-sized comfortable bed. The location was perfect for us, mid-way between Port Ellen (Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg) and Bowmore, and just a short walk from airport arrivals across a slightly unusual airport feature - a cattle grid :). It must be the quietest, loveliest walk-from-the-airport accommodation in the world. We walked, taxied and bussed the island and were blessed with some great weather. Emma and Graeme were the perfect hosts, happy to share their local knowledge with us and make the most of our short stay. It's a family-run business and they must work pretty tirelessly in the background to make things this serene for guests. Many thanks! Michael and Julia

Tips:

Our trip worked fine without a car - keep in mind there are no buses on Sundays, and a little notice works best when looking for a taxi, Mayfair this isn't :). If we were staying longer we'd have hired a car for a day or two to bring some other parts of the island into easier reach. The short Logan Air flight from / to Glasgow was a great way to get here, with some lovely views of the Firth of Clyde on the way home.

Words are not enough to describe how absolutely incredible our stay was at Glenegadale House! Emma went above and beyond to help us find transportation to Islay when there was an airline strike. On our arrival we were immediately welcomed like family and provided the yummiest home baked goods to take on our explorations of Islay. Do yourself a favor and get the fresh seafood dinner! This incredible feast is spectacularly prepared by Graeme, a master chef! And breakfast is a special treat. We felt like we were royalty for the entire stay as everything was the highest of quality. Our room was extremely comfortable and beautifully decorated like the rest of the house. Emma and Graeme are the best hosts and will be sure to make sure that you are well cared for during your stay. We were sad to leave and felt as if we had left family behind. It is no wonder how they have repeat guests.

A beautiful house on a beautiful island. Our hosts Emma and Graeme are wonderfully friendly and knowledgeable about Islay. Our room was very comfortable and very well appointed. We were surprised that Emma and Graeme weren’t formally trained as chefs because the food they cooked and served was sublime. Beautifully cooked and stunningly presented using Islay products from families and companies they’ve dealt with for years. Their attention to detail in all aspects of our stay was amazing. Emma and Graeme are so helpful and knowledgeable about Islay. They were happy to recommend other places to visit and eat. They always suggested places to visit and walks to take in different areas. They responded quickly and easily about my eating requirements (diabetic) routinely supplying alternative options. The central location is great. It’s along from the quiet airport and on the main road from Bowmore to Port Ellen providing easy access whether initially flying in to Islay, using your own transport or using the island’s buses and taxis.

Tips:

If, like us, this is your first visit to Islay, have a wonderful time and ask Emma and Graeme for help with your planning. They are very knowledgeable of their home and will suggest walks or places not to miss. If you are staying at Glenegedale we strongly recommend you take your evening meals there when available, as they are wonderful. If it’s not your first visit then you’ll know how beautiful Islay is! Tours of the distilleries are always busy so need to be booked but you can drop in for individual tastes at them all. Note that different distilleries close on different days so do plan your whisky tasting route around the island. And don’t forget the gins available and the new rum distillery.

Graeme and Emma really do go the extra mile to make guests feel happy and comfortable. We had dinner in on two of our nights and Emma recommended restaurants for the other evenings, even ringing round several places on our day of arrival till she managed to get us a reservation. The breakfast was amazing and really set you up for the day, with delicious, freshly baked muffins to take away if you wished. The Gin Menu was extremely comprehensive. Our room was spotless, the bed and bedding wonderful. We were blessed with sparkling sunshine for our stay (late September) and really connected with some of the other guests which added to our enjoyment. Unfortunately we didn’t see the Aurora Borealis but Emma explained that if they do put in an appearance, they try to ensure everyone sees the should they so wish, waking them up if necessary. Hopefully next time!

Tips:

Don’t be put off by Glenegedale House’s location near the Airport. There are very few planes on a daily basis, you really don’t hear them and watching them occasionally coming in to land through the floor to ceiling dining room windows is something of interest. There are also beautiful sunsets from this spot on sunny days. Glenegedale is well located for the bus route to Port Ellen (minutes from the hotel) should you wish to visit one of the three main distilleries and have a dram or two!

Can we rate you a 10 star? Everything was near perfect from comfy, cozy beds ( wish you’d had a king size available!) to the delicious dinner. Adding whisky to oatmeal was a nice touch!! Tips:

Just do it - you’ll not regret one moment - except leaving! If there for their dinner presentation, be sure to attend. Their wine and drink menu is great. Parking is easy (and free) and wifi works very well. Forgot a book? The library has a fine selection. The host/ owners are local with plenty of local information about touring Islay, whisky , dining out, ferries and shopping knowledge. With vast hospitality experience, you will not find a more professionally run B&B on Islay- and we tried three prior! Fantastic greeting, cake and tea on arrival nothing was too much trouble. Food was sublime and carry out bags provided for freshly baked muffins that couldn’t be managed at breakfast. Breakfast sets you up for the day and there is ample choice of local produce (the hens are just out of the back door). If you have chance to have either the fish or charcuterie and cheese platter take it, but beware you will feel full. That’s if you can finish it all. Emma and Graham are the perfect hosts. They know the Island and it’s people and will advise you on what would best suit you and your tastes. Whether it be a quiet beach or gin or whisky distillery. They have a vast selection of whiskies so you can try different distilleries you may not have been able to visit. There are a couple of beautiful lounges where you can enjoy a pre dinner drink or linger over coffee before heading to bed for a sound nights sleep. It may be near the airport, but it is not going to disturb you with its twice daily arrivals.

Glenegedale House is elegant yet casual with warm hospitality and is conveniently located across the street from the local airport. Our flight arrived early in the morning far too early for check in. However, Emma and Graeme, the proprietors of Glenegedale House, welcomed us with a pot of fresh tea and warm home made muffins and offered to store our luggage for us while we visited the island for the day. They even made arrangements for a driver to take us around the island and suggested sites to see. When we returned late that afternoon, we were warmly greeted again and shown our beautiful room. Cocktails and/or wine are served between 6:00 and 6:30 with dinner at 7:00 pm. The extensive list of liquors and wines was very impressive. The dining room in which the meals are served is stunning with a huge window looking out on the front yard with a view of Laggan Bay. The delicious food served reflected the local bounty. After a great night's sleep on the very comfortable bed, we enjoyed breakfast which was also served in the dining room. The delicious breakfast offered is large enough so that we really didn't need lunch. The kind and generous hospitality offered by Emma and Graeme made Glenegedale House feel like a second home.

Absolutely excellent in every way! Here's my full review from Trip Advisor: Graeme and Emma are truly amazing hosts! Prior to our arrival, we received personalized email communication with every detail we needed to plan for our stay. Emma was quick to respond to all my inquiries about our stay on Islay. Upon our arrival, Graeme greeted us, gave us the tour of the guest spaces, and showed us our room. We were then served tea (in silver and china) and AMAZING homemade brownies. We walked across the street to the beach for a lovely afternoon walking, collecting shells, etc. The following two days we explored the island (distilleries, Celtic cross, American monument, the woolen mill) via e-bikes (which I would highly recommend). Graeme and Emma provided loads of recommendations. Our room was charming, impeccably decorated, and very clean and inviting. Every detail had clearly been thought of. Dinner our first night was the most incredible seafood platter I've ever had (requested via email ahead the week before our arrival). Emma could name the person and time (that day!) the items on the platter were caught. It was hands down one of the best meals of my life (including Emma's delicious oatcakes). Breakfast options for both mornings were varied and delicious; I had the Scottish breakfast one morning and cheese platter the next and would highly recommend either. And don't skip Graeme's porridge! Our second night, was the one night per week they do not offer dinner to encourage guests to explore other local offerings; they provided many recommendations and offered to reserve us a table (for flexibility, we did not reserve a table but instead wandered into the Islay Inn in Port Ellen (one of Emma's recommendations) for a lovely dinner). Check out was seamless on our final morning. Upon leaving, Emma gave me her recipe and tips for her oatcakes! When (not if) we return to Islay, this will be our top choice for accommodations.

Tips:

Distilleries (obviously) American Monument was incredible. Exploring the island on e-bikes was so much fun! Walking on the beach across the street from the house.

Could not have been a better experience. Perfect blend of stellar service with enough privacy and space to enjoy it all. The inn itself is wonderful, and the ambiance that Graeme and Emma create is fantastic. Emma is basically a miracle-worker in her ability to nab a last-minute dinner reservation in town or to line up a taxi ride when few are available. The only downside was that we couldn't stay longer.

A five star hotel in miniature. A beautiful place to stay with fabulous food and a comfortable and welcoming ambience. Easily the best guest house or B and B in which we have ever stayed. The breakfasts are stunning and the whole house is spotlessly clean. Greame and Emma are just lovely. Good value for such a first class stay. A sharing platter on one of the evenings is an absolute must!

Tips:

We ate at Glenegedale 2 of the 4 nights we stayed. Certainly the best food on the island. The Port Charlotte Hotel has a great atmosphere and a high standard of pub food. Very clean too. SeaSalt in Port Ellen is very welcoming with a buzzy atmosphere. Ardbeg Distillery has a great outdoor eating space, where you'll be served cullen skink from a gorgeous green caravan.(Daytime only and closed Sundays and Mondays currently).

The seafood platter was to die for!!The best part was the owners they could not do enough for us and made us feel like part of their family. Definitely five star in all ways.

Tips:

Food in Bridgend Hotel was brilliant. Of course all of the distilleries. The Big Strand beach across from Glenegedale is a must walk and also Mull of Oa for a great drive and walk.

Staying at Glenegedale House is a must. The house is decorated to a high standard. The food is out of this world. The atmosphere is home from home. So comfortable. A real treat! Must do - Seafood Platter for a treat. And be a breakfast person - otherwise you’re really missing out! It’s very handy for the airport and the bus stops right outside. Otherwise, car is a good alternative.

Tips:

Islay is fabulous for some time away. The island runs at its own pace but the welcome and hospitality are fantastic! Jura is a vibrant community with lots going on. The islanders on both Islay and Jura are forging ahead in innovation and growth. Things to try - Islay Tuk Tuk. See Jura. Lussa Gin. Bowmore. Islay Wines (Port Ellen) and Islay Ales. Jura Brewery pale ale. Lynne’s Labels in Bowmore. Sea Salt Bistro in Port Ellen. Buy Orsay Sea Salt. So much more than just whisky! Although the whisky is good too.

Emma and Graeme are fabulous hosts and catered for us exceptionally throughout our four day stay. Home baking, dinners and tremendous porridge (and associated fruits) AND a fantastic choice of cooked breakfasts (full Scottish was my favourite) all added to our enjoyment and satisfaction for a wonderful stay.

Tips:

We drove (via ferries) to the Island and there is an airport directly opposite, an easy 5 minute walk across the road to Glenegedale House. I think defo need a car to get around and see all the sites. We travelled up and down the Island with ease (nothing too far or onerous) and there is plenty to see, history, Monuments AND many excellent Whisky Distilleries...

Graeme and Emma are phenomenal hosts. They were kind, thoughtful, and very helpful during our first visit to Islay. The accommodations and dining were all top-notch. The breakfast is out of this world, and we were so happy to treat ourselves to the amazing seafood platter. The location of Glenegedale was perfect for us, too, since the short walk over from the airport was convenient. I wished we could have stayed longer! I will not hesitate to recommend Glenegedale to my friends.

Tips:

If you decide to stay at Glenegedale over a Wednesday night, be aware that dinner is not served in the dining room, and take-away (take-out) is not permitted in the house. Since we didn't bring a car with us to the island, this posed some challenges for us in coordinating transportation as the bus service stops early in the evening and taxis are expensive and also hard to come by if not pre-arranged. My advice is to make your dinner reservations before you arrive to help avoid losing out.

A stay at Glengedale House is like staying with wonderful, hospitable friends who can cook like a dream and just happen to live round the corner from some of the world’s best whisky distilleries! They also happen to have other witty, interesting, house-guests staying with them who share what they have been doing during the day with tips and advice on places to visit. The essentials: a comfortable bed and immaculately clean house get full marks. But Glengedale House is so much more than that. Graeme and Emma make staying there a really special experience and they create a really wonderful, welcoming, atmosphere. Be warned — you will come away with lifestyle envy, as they show a real passion for what they do. You will begin to wonder if you could open a B&B on a Scottish island. And then you will realise just how much hard work they put in behind the scenes (drawing on their years of experience in hospitality) to make it look effortless. You will likely conclude that you are better leaving it to them as the experts, and will just book your next stay with them! Glengedale House is just totally fabulous and will probably spoil all your future B&B stays. Nowhere else can compare!

My wife and I happened upon the Glenegedale House a few years back, by luck. It was an absolutely lovely stay, with the warmest two people in the world. This time around we were luck enough to secure a room during the whiskey festival. This was by luck (a cancellation). Should you want to sray here during the festival, schedule well in advance. The house and rooms are beyond beautiful. The location is quite central. It's also right across from the airport so getting there is a breeze. But don't worry, there's not a bit of noise from it. The breakfasts they serve cannot be beat. The quality, freshness and taste of all their food is absolutely amazing. Make sure to order the porridge (with a side of Laphroaig). I really couldn't say enough kind things about Graeme and Emma or how wonderful a space they provide. If you happen to be on the island and are in need of lodgings, it would be difficult to beat Glenegedale House. Thank you!!!!

This was our second visit to Islay, not just because of the whiskies but because of our last stay at Glenegedale and this stay makes us want to come back for more. The warmth and humour of both Emma and Graeme, the lovely interior and most importantly the breakfasts. Graeme’s porridge with all the trimmings, a must try. I tried 4 of the options this time and all were delicious and beautifully presented. This time we had dinner twice, again taste and presentation beautiful. The extras such as arrival tea and wedge of cake add to the stay. Amazing place to stay.

Tips:

Try all the distilleries! Over 30 walks to try. And Cullen Skink at Ardbeg, from the food truck or even better at Kilchoman with a Sticky Toffee pudding to follow. We enjoyed the tastings at Laphroig ( nice touch of free coffee ) and Bunnahabhain the most although all the distilleries have friendly, engaging and knowledgeable staff. Some will offer a free dram.

The wine list, gin list and whisky list (of course!) is also fabulous in the guesthouse. I don't know why you would stay anywhere else on Islay. Glenegedale House is a gorgeous place to stay - from the quality of the linen and the beautifully decorated rooms to the exceptional breakfasts and expertly crafted drinks next to the fire in the evening - it makes a trip to this very special place even more special. I enjoyed my delicious vegan breakfasts just as much as my bacon-loving relatives - everything is homemade and superb quality. Graeme and Emma are consummate hosts, nothing is too much trouble but they do it with such grace and good humour, you feel like you are staying with friends. It was a family treat after a long two years and we felt richly spoiled by the experience.

Tips:

Graeme and Emma can give great advice on where to go based on what you like to do. Islay boasts spectacular beaches - Machir Bay, Saligo Bay and Claggain Bay were our favourites. The RSPB Reserve at Gruinart Loch is fabulous - go to Ardnave for the most beautiful sand dunes to a stunning coastline. The stunning views and warm welcome at Bunnahabhain Distillery is well worth the visit. The three distillery walk from Port Ellen is lovely. We loved the tour of Kilchoman Distillery where you can see the process from grain to glass. Even if you don't enjoy it's favourite export, the places and people of Islay will mean that you want to return...and to Glengedale House!

22nd February 2022:

It is easy to forget that Glenegedale is a B&B Guest House as the service delivered by both Emma and Graeme is that of one of the finest hotels we have ever stayed in. The thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity of both was so special and is such a rarity. It is they who make this fabulous stay so perfect and so magical. Personal touches such as thoughtful trays of tea and coffee in front of the fire to welcome us home during a stormy evening, quietly noting the way we both preferred our drinks and delivering thus. They have the talent to make everything so special and so much thought goes into everything they do. Always on hand to offer advice, making calls to help us with our journey, resolving issues for us with our transport and just going above and beyond. As with all aspects of Glenegedale, this first-class personalised service is on a par with, if not better, than the personal concierge services you would find in a superior 5 star hotel. There was no fuss, no noise, we were left in peace when we needed to be and yet the hosts were available when we needed help or a lovely chat with them. They have those rare gifts of making everyone feel cared for and create such a natural easy, cosy relaxing atmosphere which I know is a result of their enormous hard work behind the scenes. The most helpful, kind, thoughtful hosts we have ever known who do everything with a smile, this was a five star experience from start to finish and we do travel a great deal. We cannot recommend this beautiful place and its hosts more highly.

Tips:

We dined each night at Glenegedale which we couldn't recommend more highly - beautiful home cooked locally sourced food which was of 5 star restaurant quality in both taste and presentation including scallops hand dived just 2 hours earlier and sea salt from around the corner. We visited Laphroig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg distilleries which were fantastic, travelled around the island to the coastal areas, the woollen mill, the craft shop. We saw deer, seals and the landscape was stunning. It is the most friendly island you could come across - everybody waved, smiled and helped us and we felt so warmly welcome. Emma and Graeme told us stories and histories about the area and helped us to plan our days. Glenegedale and its home, Islay, radiate a genuine warmth which touches your heart; it will remain in our hearts forever.

Food was excellent both at breakfast and in the evening. The hosts are tremendously helpful and the seating areas comfortable. Rooms are smallish but very comfortable and the beds equally so. We'd return in a heartbeat.

Tips:

Six of us toured distilleries on the island with Hughie as our taxi driver. His number is available from the Guest House. Gaelic College is a good place for lunch. The Munchie Box in Bowmore is also good value for takeaway.

Poached and fresh fruit was served with breakfast The accommodation was warm and comfortable and the wallpaper was fascinating There was a good wine list and an impressive selection of Islay. We would definitely like to return.

We genuinely find it hard to give anything other than very positive feedback across the board, you really looked after us very well, thank you!

Tips:

As you know, we did several walks. I think our favourite one was to Ardnav point- we walked for several hours and didn’t see anyone else the whole time! Something else we would have done is go to the Port Charlotte hotel for the live folk music nights which I think are Sunday and one other night.

Nice welcome with tea and homebaking. Lovely lounges which are beautifully furnished. Dining room has a great outlook. Graeme and Emma are great hosts, they readily advise and assist with plans. Breakfasts are outstanding, everything cooked to perfection and well presented. Bedroom quiet and comfortable. The whole place is spotlessly clean.

Tips:

The beaches are outstanding. Even if you are not a whisky drinker it is worthwhile visiting a distillery. If you get the opportunity to eat at Glenegedale please do, you will not be disappointed.

Perfect example of excellent hospitality. Spotless, well-designed, fantastic food and drinks. Emma and Graeme will go above and beyond to make their guests comfortable, and are enormously helpful when it comes to travel advice, restaurant bookings, ferry schedules, etc. Plain perfect!

Tips:

Distillery visits are obviously a must, but there is so much more to Islay than whisky. Beautiful beaches and landscape, nice little towns like Port Ellen, cute shops such as Celtic House in Bowmore. Take your time, take detours as you drive around to discover places that will not make it into your Lonely Planet. Go with the flow and pace of Islay, and simply relax.

28th September 2021:

This was our first time at Glenegedale House and boy it didn’t disappoint. Emma and Graeme are just delightful hosts, so friendly and welcoming. The tea, coffee and freshly baked goods on arrival is such a lovely touch. We stayed for 3 nights and had dinner on 2 occasions. The seafood platter was absolutely amazing, lobster landed at 5pm and on the plate by 7pm, can’t ask for fresher than that. The food at breakfast and dinner was out of this world. Our room was lovely and very comfortable. Some previous reviews comment on the pride Emma and Graeme take in what they do for their guests and its so true. They want everyone to enjoy their stay with them and their stay on Islay and will fully support and recommend other businesses on the island. On the COVID front, we both felt very safe staying at Glenegedale. Masks were worn around the building and everything is spotless. We enjoyed it so much we have booked stay again next year. Thanks very much to you both. Xx

Tips:

We visited a few of the distilleries and they didn’t disappoint. We also went to see Audrey at Islay Gin in Bridgend, highly recommend. We also went to see the American Monument at Mull of Oa. It’s a bit of a hike to get there but to read about what had happened and how the people of Islay helped was beautiful. The views are also stunning. The beaches we’d recommend are Machair Bay, Laggan Bay and Saligo Bay - all beautiful. We ate at the Islay Hotel on the recommendation of Emma and it’s was lovely.

Emma and Graeme are the perfect hosts and go the extra mile before and during your stay - ensuring that you have all the information you need to make the most of visiting Islay and providing a beautiful, comfortable and well equipped room with lots of lovely little touches to make it that little bit extra special - Tunnocks Caramel Wafers! Nom Nom! Breakfast and evening meals are superb and are an experience in themselves - you've just got to have the porridge 'Islay' style... A good choice of gins, wines and whiskys to keep us going in between distillery visits. Definitely 'the' place to stay" - we can't wait to book our next trip.

Tips:

So many places to see and things to do on the island - beautiful beaches, a great variety of distilleries to visit, great places to eat, local crafts and shops to get those special gifts and ancient monuments to visit! The food was absolutely delicious and no-one does such a fabulous breakfast as these guys!

Tips:

The distilleries are all interesting & Lagavulin, Laphroaig & Ardbeg are within an easy distance of each other on an excellent footpath. Pristine beaches, some wonderful wildlife to spot, amazing scenery - and you can pick up a takeaway at Seasalt to eat at the tables overlooking Port Ellen harbour or something more formal at the 18 restaurant at the Machrie. Thank you Emma and Graeme for a great week. We really enjoyed the facilities and were impressed with how thoughtful everything had been prepared. We plan to return to the island and will definitely be looking to stay at Glenegedale House again.

Tips:

We really enjoyed the distillery tastings, in particular at Kilchoman, Laphroaig and Bunnahabhain. The local bus was reliable and stops straight outside the guesthouse. We had a fantastic 3 night stay at Glenegadale. Emma and Graeme are such nice people and wonderful hosts. They can't do enough to make sure your stay is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The food is delicious, the venison we had on our first night stay was cooked to perfection. Breakfast didn't disappoint either, from the traditional Islay porridge, to the poached fruit and home baking, we enjoyed it all. We can't praise this delightful B&B and it's owners enough, it was a truly remarkable and memorable stay for us. We will be back!

Tips:

The Islay Sea-Adventure Wildlife tour is well worth adding to your itenary if you have the time. Great location for exploring Islay; most points of interest were less than a 30 minute drive away. However, there isn't really anywhere to walk to in the immediate vicinity. Owner Response:

Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are so happy you enjoyed your time here at Glenegedale House. Its such a shame you never got the chance to walk to the beach just one mile from our front door ....its seven miles of sand. I know one of the other guests shared a lot of their tips and you had great plans of your own but I wish I was able to have directed you to have a wander down the beach or through the trails behind us. Our daughter rides her highland pony up through the woods behind us ...theyre not obvious but literally three minutes from our front door. Ardnave is a beautiful walk as you mentioned and so is The Oa. As we chatted about Bunnahabhain is the best place for the otters. Next time... Emma

Amazing stay all round! My wife and I loved every minute of our two night stay. The best B & B we have ever stayed at. Loved the chocolate brownies and coffee on our arrival, my wife loves her finer things in life and I have to say she is singing all praises on this hidden gem of a B & B! The beautiful deco and the attention to detail took our breath away, very clean rooms, perfect China and all white and crispy linen. everything about Glenegendale is out of this world. Emma and Graeme are such a hardworking couple, nothing was too much trouble for Emma, we enjoyed the delious home baking we took away with us after every breakfast. Emma is a world class trip adviser, everything she told us about the island on where to visit was spot on, as it our first time to visit the island we were very impressed with the grass roots knowledge of Isle of Islay. Greame was very accommodative to my wife's dietary requirements, that made our stay easier and more relaxing. All in all a great and fabulous B & B, must stay at when in Islay!

Tips:

Our highlight of the visit was the boat trip and for the best experience ask to go on the smaller boat with the skipper Gus. He has a vast knowledge on the isla and more, we enjoyed a drum or two. Visit the Seasalt restaurant for some great seafood. We drove to Port Charlotte and the surrounding areas. We will be back definitely.

Thank you Emma and Graeme for making our stay at Glenegedale so enjoyable in your lovely, comfortable guest house. You must work very hard to maintain such a high standard, which you definitely achieve. Well done! We had a most enjoyable time with you, and on Islay, and would love to return! Your breakfasts are very special, especially porridge served the Islay way!!! Great muffins too, and I just 💕 your bees!!!

Tips:

Great location. Accessed all of the island very easily from Glenegedale. Enjoyed all the lovely beaches though it wasn’t warm enough to take a dip! A lovely island with friendly people.

Cannot recommend the hosts or accommodation highly enough.

Tips:

If you’re cycling I’d recommend an e bike. Islay is quite flat but the wind can be killer. I cycled 90 miles visiting distilleries. No way could I have even contemplated that distance without the help of the motor. (I am an occasional cyclist).

Glenegedale house is a wonderful place to stay on Islay. Emma and Graeme are fantastic hosts and truly do go the extra mile to make your stay with them so memorable. We’ll be back, and hopefully soon!

Tips:

From Glenegedale, Port Ellen and Bowmore are easily reachable by bus or taxi but your own transport will help get to other beautiful and less accessible parts of the island. Obviously any visitor to Islay must visit some of the nine distilleries and sample the best whiskey! Also try Islay sea adventures for a fantastic boat trip seeing so much wildlife and the island from a different perspective.

Food in particular was a highlight and I will send you a photo of the sharing plate, maybe a photo could go on your website, a description alone does not do it justice. We felt very safe with all your Covid organisation.

Tips:

Your own information booklet had lots of ideas. This could be pointed out when being shown the room. I also used www.islayinfo.com which I really liked. We enjoyed the circular walk to the American Monument. The beach outside your house. The Kilchoman Military Cemetery and beach below it. The drive from Port Ellen to Ardbeg. Very nice guest house with comfortable public lounges to relax in. Views over the small airport and to the sea beyond. Proprietors are the perfect hosts and have a wealth of local knowledge so can advise you on where to go, eat etc. Amazing breakfast sets you up for the day and in the evening you can partake of seafood or meat and cheese platters. The seafood is locally sourced and is of the highest quality. Rooms are comfortable with good quality linen on the beds and toiletries, hairdryer etc provided. Tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms to welcome you after a hard day's sightseeing!

Tips:

Plenty to do outdoors for cyclists, walkers etc. We opted to go cockling at Loch Gruinart. Cockles here are big and the flesh is plump and juicy. Bring your wellies and rakes! Also for whisky lovers, lots of distilleries to choose from. Many have shops and visitor centres with lovely views of the stunning scenery. A visit to Portnahaven, a lovely picturesque village, is to be recommended. We tried Sea Salt in Port Ellen for dinner one night and were not disappointed. 31st August 2020:

We came across a cancellation at Glenegedale during our week off and we’re lucky enough that we were accommodated. We had difficulties with our travel arrangements but Emma went the extra mile and beyond to make sure we could get there. We are grateful that she did because we had an amazing week. The B&B is located close to the airport with Bowmore and Port Ellen short drives. There is a nearby beach “the big strand” which is beautiful and often deserted. The B&B is immaculate. The house is beautiful and well kept with a slight vintage charm. Emma & Graeme are very welcoming and we were very comfortable in their company. They have a lot of knowledge of Islay and were able to give us excellent advice and ideas on how to occupy our time there. You would be forgiven for struggling to drag yourself out of the cozy bed, but once you do you are rewarded with one of the best breakfast experiences you will encounter. The dining tables are laid out with the attention to detail that the hosts pride themselves with. The dishes and silverware are beautiful and compliment the surroundings of the room. To start we were offered porridge and shown how it is best topped whilst on the island (I won’t spoil the surprise). You are also offered a cooked breakfast of choice, with high quality ingredients including eggs from the hosts’ hens. You are also offered granola, homemade jam & marmalade, and fruits. Everything served is perfect. They are extremely generous but you don’t need to worry about waste. Any scraps are fed to the animals. We took our freshly baked cupcakes with us to have later in the day, but there is an honesty box with a selection of cakes near the house. What we tried was delicious and you will find it hard not to treat yourself. Graeme and Emma could not have done more to make our holiday the best it could be. Our stay at Glenegedale House will be remembered for all the right reasons. It is a fine example of how guest accommodation should be.

Tips:

We followed the advice given by Graeme and Emma for to make best use of our time during our visit. Islay has many beautiful beaches and you are spoiled for choice. Machir Bay is my favourite of those that I have visited, but there are beaches on the south part of the island with calmer waters that are safe to enter if you can brave the cold. You will know of the distilleries on the island which are the main attraction for many. I would also recommend taking the boat over to Jura for a day. It is a more remote island but equally beautiful in its own way.

Some of the kindest most engaging people we've met in all our travels. Their welcoming nature was wonderfully complimented by their knowledge of the island and outstanding recommendations on where and how to go about exploring. Saving the best for last, the food was extraordinary. The seafood plate for dinner was incredible but the breakfasts were absolutely unmatched. I can't give a strong enough recommendation. We will no doubt return.

Tips:

See the whole island, each corner has something to offer. Bring hiking shoes even for simple touring just to be safe. Islay Woolen Mill has beautiful items, fascinating machinery and history, and, like the whole island, the nicest people (Marcus and Gordon). Eat the seafood and drink the scotch.

Tips:

The best food we had was at Glenegedale with the seafood platter and charcuterie, we also really enjoyed Sea Salt at Port Ellen and the Port Charlotte Hotel. My son and I have just stayed here two nights to celebrate his 30th Birthday. We both had a great time, at the hotel and on the island. We received a very warm welcome, and the owners were very helpful with planning our trips out. We visited two distilleries, great beaches including the one opposite the hotel. We also went over to Jura to Lussa Gin as another suggestion from Emma. Great gin, bought three bottles. We ate out at the Sea Salt one night and Charlotte Hotel the other, both very good. Also went to Portnahaven which is definitely worth a visit. The hotel is very well furnished. Three lounges to relax in, which was a lot for four bedrooms. Lovely twin room number 3. Breakfast is one of the best I’ve had, with plenty of choice. You may see cheaper places on websites, but this was worth every penny.

We are so very grateful to Emma and Graeme for the most wonderful time that we spent at their house. They took such good care of us. Everything was perfect: from the first tea and cake that they welcomed us with to the last afternoon that we comfortably spent in the lounge (very generous tea and cake again!) long past the checkout time. They made reservations for dinner for us and took us back when our ferry was cancelled and called the port for us. Their breakfasts are amazing and stylish, Emma’s soaked fruit are to die for. We will for long remember our warm and cozy evenings by the fire place with tea (under 18) and whiskey (over). Such a lovely family!

I honestly cannot say enough good things about this place. Emma was an absolute wonder. So friendly and chatty and hospitable that you really felt like you were visiting an old friend. The rooms were super clean and seemed newly renovated / furbished and had everything you needed. The living room was so cozy we stayed up for hours reading, sipping on whisky and hanging out truly feeling at home. Last but not least, hands down one of the BEST BREAKFASTS I've ever had - porridge with cream, brown sugar and whisky AND delicious local smoked salmon with eggs not to mention home baked muffins. Seriously - if you're going to Islay, PROMISE ME YOU WILL STAY HERE.

Tips:

You really need a car to get around the island . There are buses but not too frequent. There are no places to have a meal except Bowmore which is nearest but no later buses. If you are a whisky lover there are plenty distilleries to visit but you would really need to have transport. In good weather it would be a nice place for walking etc.

1st September 2019:

Glenegedale House is not just a property, a B&B, or a hotel, it is a truly extraordinary experience. We arrived during a rainstorm and were greeted by Emma, who quickly ushered us into the house with fresh coffee and cakes. Immediately we felt welcomed and part of their Islay family. Breakfast is a food lovers heaven: homemade fruit compote, fresh breads, slow-cooked porridge with cream and a “special ingredient,” and a long menu of specialties. We ate dinner at the House twice, first with an incredible meat/cheese charcuterie, and second with an even more stunning selection of fresh seafood. Emma’s presentation of the platters was delightful, she told us they try to source everything locally. I told her she should video tape the presentations, it’s the best marketing for Islay one could ever imagine! Definitely 5-star in presentation, service, and quality.

Tips:

The House itself outshines the amazing pictures you see online. The sitting areas are beautifully appointed with comfortable sofas and antiques. There are 4 guest rooms, ours was the king overlooking the courtyard and hills beyond. The room included a large wardrobe with a range of amenities and the en-suite was small but modern. Loved the pillows, and the sheets were incredibly soft. The House is centrally located with easy access across the island. Graeme introduced us to Heather with Bauld’s private hire tour service, who helped us explore Islay - something you must do. Thank you, we can’t wait to come back!

This is one of the best B and Bs we've stayed in. The owners were very welcoming and gave us very good advice about where to go and what to see. The house was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent

Tips:

Islay is a beautiful island, and we enjoyed exploring it, stopping off occasionally for whisky tasting at the various distilleries on the island The owners suggested that we do a day trip to Jura, which is the neighbouring island. We really enjoyed taking the short ferry crossing, and were surprised at how different it is from Islay- very undeveloped and with only around 100 residents.

Very comfortable stay. Thank you. Breakfast was excellent. The cooked breakfast served hot on hot plates. Easy to do but often doesn't happen. Understandable that no dogs in house but not ideal as we (unexpectedly) had a dog with us. We prefer a bath but shower very adequate.Room very comfortable. A lovely place to stay.

Tips:

We enjoyed the antiquities esp. Lord of the Isles sites. The beaches are varied and wonderful and some great walks. Very good for bird watchers (hen harriers, waders). RSPB sites well managed.

Owner Response:

Thank you for taking time to write your review for your stay with Graeme and I at our Five Star Gold bed and breakfast Glenegedale house on Islay. We are so glad you enjoyed our service and cleanliness. You are right as per our website and all listings we do not allow dogs to stay in Glenegedale House. We do however have a self catering cottage where we welcome dogs by prearrangement. As you mentioned we did not know you had a dog travelling with you until you asked just days before your stay where was the best place for dog grooming on the island of Islay. At the time of booking you mentioned you would prefer a bath and we explained that we do not have baths instead we have double showers in the en suites of each room. We also suggested an alternative property that sounded like it would suit your needs better. We are so glad however you enjoyed your stay with us and the fruit, porridge, baking and cooked breakfast each morning along side the charcuterie and cheese platter you enjoyed with some soft drinks as you choose not to use our wine list or indeed the 100 scottish gins and whisky list in the evenings. We source these all from the most amazing suppliers in Scotland and are so incredibly proud of what we do here to make all our guests have the perfect stay. It was lovely to chat with you and help plan your day out with you and help you find the very best bits of Islay.

Ask Emma and Graham for guidance on Islay nature: they gave us an excellent set of plans for how to spend our limited time that was extremely attentive to our interests. Very friendly, informative, personal and just a lovely experience. Great attention to detail from saying you can get fresh milk in your room and delicious breakfast. Special porridge with local whisky. Stewed and fresh fruits difficult to choose from. My favourite was the plums. Muffins which we took away were just absolutely delicious, would love the recipe but could also be due to the newly laid eggs!

Tips:

The seafood platter was decadent and delicious, just amazing, never had anything like it before. The beaches around Islay are Incredible and even on hot sunny day not busy, Machine, Saligo and the Big Strand worth looking at. Mull of Or I teresting, wonderful wild flowers and wildlife. Are have point and beaches worth the effort to see too. Hard to find cake and coffee but distilleries and Islay House all tasty. Distilleries I am sure worth visiting, went to Cail Ila but it only open at 1pm due to refurbishment. 5 tastes of cask whisky, need designated driver! Very informative. After our visit here in June 2019 we learned that Glenegedale House is a very special place. Graeme and Emma run it with the utmost care! Warm and welcoming, you will feel at home not long after you step through the door. The preparation and presentation of breakfast is wonderful and a perfect way to start your day. Dining on an amazing and delicious morning meal while gazing out of the windows at the views of the sheep meadow, across to the airport, the Atlantic, and on a clear day Ireland! Do not pass on the porridge, and prepare it exactly as Emma tells you! The rooms are beautiful and comfortable, perfect for retiring to for rest and relaxation after a long day of exploring Islay. The parlors downstairs are very cozy and inviting, just the place to sit with a wee dram in the evening and plan your next day. Thank you Emma and Graeme for an unforgettable stay!

Tips:

Tap into Graeme and Emma's vast knowledge of the island, all you have to do is ask and they will provide perfect details of where to go, what to see and exactly how to get there. Visit the bookshelf in the parlor for an extensive collection of maps, guidebooks and more! You can take them with you for the day. They will also make recommendations on where to dine and are more than happy to make reservations for dinner at any of the many great restaurants. There is so much to see and do but not miss the Mull of Oa and the walk to the American Monument for breathtaking views. Hosts were absolutely lovely and considerate, eager to please, offer advice, and professional. We quite enjoyed our stay, breakfast was outstanding, location was convenient for bus, small island airport, east to drive to If arriving by ferry. Our room was comfortable, well appointed, clean, and included en suite bathroom.

Tips:

If like us you’re visiting distilleries but don’t want to drive, there is a bus stop literally on the edge on the property. The hosts have great local knowledge and were more than happy to make suggestions and provide info. The Laphroaig tour/distillery was by far the best of the big three near Port Ellen. Wifi/network connectivity can be an issue, but that’s can be an issue for the entire island, not just this location. The hosts were wonderful, friendly and accommodating. The property was clean. It felt like I was staying in a friend’s house, not a hotel. A friend who just happens to cool an amazing breakfast every morning! At first I didn’t understand why they needed to know when I was checking in, but now I realize it’s because transportation around the island is limited and they were just looking out for my well-being. Thanks so much Graeme and Emma! I will definitely stay with you again!

Tips:

The property is right next to the Islay Airport bus stop. That’s important because there is nothing else around except beautiful nature. So if you want to eat out or get groceries you’ll have to plan for it because the location is smack in the middle of Bowmore and Port Ellen. But as an escape, it’s pretty great. They were happy to phone ahead to distilleries, give us ideas for itineraries and make recommendations for other places to visit and eat. If we go back to Islay, we won’t stay anywhere else!

Our stay at Glenegedale House was very enjoyable. The house itself was warm despite subzero temperatures and our hosts could not have been more welcoming and helpful. All areas in the house were fresh, clean, comfortable and furnished to a high standard. Both breakfast and our evening meal were excellent. I will certainly be recommending it to my friends and hope to return in the future.

Tips:

Islay is great for bird and wildlife watching. In our two days we had the expected large flocks of geese but also golden eagles and many other species. We saw seals, deer and an otter.

26th October 2018:

Graeme and Emma are fantastic hosts. I travel constantly and stay in accommodation all over the UK, the Glenegdale is the best. You receive 5-star treatment from the moment you contact the guest house until the moment you leave. The rooms are large, comfy and meticulously clean. The breakfast is to die for, I normally go for the traditional Scottish, however, whatever your choice your needs will be met. If you are visiting Islay, you will not be disappointed with your stay in the Glenegdale. Tommy

Tips:

You will require transport or hire car for evening meals. Graeme and Emma are only too happy to assist with these arrangements.

----- Clean and beautifully decorated place with a wonderful location right next to the sea, quite close to the ferry (Port Ellen) and the airport. Staff was really friendly and helpful. Also food was delicious (I really recommend taking the breakfast). On top of other things the room was nice and warm, which is not always the case when staying in Scotland. Definitely going to visit this place again!

Our hosts took care of everything; dinner reservations, tours, taxis when needed and useful information about Islay. Emma is a dynamo and Graeme runs a great inn. Breakfast was yummy and the house is very relaxing. It was a wonderful part of our holiday in Scotland.

Tips:

Emma knows everything as she is a native of Islay. Put yourself in her hands.

Graeme and Emma could not be more accommodating or helpful and made our stay on Islay even more special. The rooms are comfortable and the breakfast is delicious - it's the first time we've had whisky on our porridge, and it won't be the last! With two options for a hot breakfast, freshly-baked muffins and a huge selection of fresh fruit, what more could you ask for? The guest house is conveniently located opposite the airport (though there is no noise from the infrequent planes) and there is a bus stop right outside. We couldn't ask for more. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

12th September 2018:

We had the most wonderful few days at Glenegedale House - a more perfect place to stay is hard to imagine. We were made to feel so welcome by Graeme and Emma - the most wonderful hosts; always available but never intrusive. The breakfasts were totally scrumptious and so generous. The house is absolutely beautiful and our room was gorgeous; everywhere was spotless and so thoughtfully decorated with comfortable rooms for guests to use. Plenty of piping hot water, soft towels and lovely toiletries. Islay is beautiful and our stay was well and truly topped off by staying at Glenegedale House - we shall return. Many thanks.

Tips:

The Islay Hotel in Port Ellen was great for supper as was the hotel in Port Charlotte. The Peatzeria in Bowmore was good and the Ardbeg Distillery cafe was also delicious. The Oa was magnificent and the lifeboat at Port Askaig was great. We loved the variety of lighthouses and wonderful expanses of sandy beaches.
