BARRIEMORE OBAN

8th September 2024:

This is such a nice place to stay in Oban. Our room was beautifully decorated (as is the whole building) and was extremely comfortable, with everything you could need and a stunning view out over the water. Barrimore's situation at the end of the esplanade makes it very peaceful, although only a nice stroll from the bustle of the town and harbour. Jan and Mark had explained the family commitments that keep them from being in the building very much when we booked (although they had absolutely no need to) but they had a very good welcoming system in place to ensure we knew everything we needed and had everything we needed. We would love to come back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay here.

Ee-usk on Oban harbourside is highly recommended.

Gem of a find. Excellent and immaculate accommodation at reasonable price .Stunning views across the bay and nice 8 min walk into the port. Lovely hotel at the end of the promenade. We had a large room at the from of the hotel with beautiful sea views over to Isle of Kerrera. Good size ensuite shower room. Large lounge with extra supplies and nice conservatory to relax in. Hosts Mark &Jan provided excellent information of restaurants, pubs and facilities in Oban. Short stroll along the promenade into town with plenty of places to eat and drink. Locals are friendly and welcoming. Would recommend.

You must try Markie Dans for food and drink. Staff are very friendly and work really hard. Also has live music some nights. It’s very popular so I would advise booking if you want food. Ferries are very reasonably priced to Mull snd other islands.

I have stayed several times at the Barriemore in Oban, and I intend to stay there again in the very near future. The owners are very friendly and welcoming, and the Barriemore itself has absolutely everything I require for a peaceful holiday in Oban. I have no hesitation in recommending the Barriemore in Oban to you, as you will not be disappointed, and will be well looked after.

The Lorne Bar in Stevenson Street does great bar meals, and will not cost you a fortune. I would recommend the olives, home made soup, and the Macaroni & chips, absolutely fabulous. I was chatting to some American holidaymakers on the Promenade, who were looking for a "traditional friendly scotch pub" :-) I directed them to the Lorne Bar it fits the bill perfectly.

Lovely room, great view over the bay. Comfortable bed (my pressure points usually scream all night due to uncomfortable hotel mattresses - not in this case). Nice little welcoming touches added (in particular - a wee decanter of sherry). We've been staying off and on in Oban for over 40 years and it has taken us all this time to find this little gem. Can't wait until next time.

We used Cuan Mor and Piazza for meals - both excellent. We were fortunate enough to watch the antics of a pod of dolphins right in front of our window. Watching the sun set over the bay (with the bonus of a ferry sailing into view) is just sooooo Scottish and a sight not to be missed!!

Jan offered some fantastic tips before our stay and we went to a number of the places that were recommended. Mark was always on hand during our stay and was always very helpful.

We loved our visit to the chocolate shop and Waterfront Fishouse restaurant.

We had room 6 which is top floor and extra large. Very nicely decorated and the views are fabulous. The bed is super comfy and the ensuite with bath has a fab view and is a really decent size. The side window views the town in the distance and the front views the straights towards Kerrara. We love watching the ferrys go past the window and the ever changing view. Barriemore being the last guesthouse on this road means it is a fairly quiet location compared with the other hotels on the front.We have stayed at several guest houses on this stretch and this is the best.

So much to do in, and from Oban. Ganavan sands is a fab beach with a fab view and good facilities. Take the ferry to Kerrara and walk to the castle and cafe. The 3 Isles trip to Staffa is fantastic, definitely worth the money. The green shack on the pier for seafood. Take a trip down to Ellenbach to see the slate Isles. Bring suitable clothing, it can be wet, cold, windy, sunny, warm, you name it!

The Barriemore is an excellent small hotel. We had several opportunities to meet Mark. He was very friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and comfortable. We had a nice view over Oban Bay. It was a nice, relatively short walk to the main part of town, and a short walk, in the other direction to Dunollie Castle and the Dog Stone.

Reservations at fancier restaurants in town are recommended. EE USK was excellent if you like seafood. We took the 3 Isle Tour from CalMac Ferries, which was very nice and included Mull, Iona, and Staffa, where we saw puffins and Fingal's cave... both amazing. Oban is a wonderful town and the Barriemore is an excellent place to stay.

I loved staying here! Although there arent staff based in the building, they are around and it feels a very welcoming atmosphere. There are lots of facilities for self catering as there is a dining breakfast room with microwave etc for guests use. Also a lovely sun room looking out to the sea. I would definately stay here again.

The location was great, the owners were lovely and helpful, and we were lucky to get a two bed apartment that our family could share without being stuffed in one room. Great place, would highly recommend.

Coast, Cuan Mor were great places to eat. The Oban distillery tours fill up - get booked in early. The three islands tour is pricey but walking on Staffa and see the puffins was magical.

Enjoyed visiting Dunollie Castle and the quiet beach at Gavanan. Port Appin was very picturesque and made a pleasant day out combined with a stop at the Castle Stalker View cafe en route. Exceeded our expectations by a mile! What a truly beautiful place to stay, with extra touches of hospitality that went above and beyond. Would have loved to have stayed even longer!

An easy walk into the center of town along the waterfront. We dined at Waterfront Fishhouse, Piazza and Ee-usk per Mark's recommendations. All three were fantastic. The town is full of things to do and see, and every person we encountered was friendly. The distillery and chocolate shop are musts!

Had an amazing time , room was so lovely, had everything including sherry ! We didn’t have a sea view cos booked late but so what you can take your sherry etc and sit outside and see life and boats go by.

Oban is a great place, turn right and go towards a castle and a beach or turn left and head into town. We went on a 2 hour boat trip, listened to music in bars, did a lot of walking and then went for food. Recommend the Lorne Bar for reasonable priced food but lots of lovely restaurants.

You have a superb quality establishment, locationis great, both close enough and far enough from the town in equal measure. Beautifully clean and presented and a wonderful night's sleep had by us both.

The room was excellent, clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated in a modern Scottish way. Mark and Jan were super responsive and accommodating, giving clear instructions and we wished we booked a second night. The shower was great, water pressure and temperature was good. Oban distillery is a must visit and must-purchase. The George fish and chip restaurant was delicious, and the town itself is beautiful.

Oh my goodness your place was by far our favourite stay throughout our 5 weeks of travelling. I wish I lived in one of those water view rooms with cozy chairs looking out at the view. Just heaven. No complaints at all, the bonus lounge with microwave is very thoughtful, comfy beds with duvets that actually covered our entire bodies - it was all perfect. If I'm blessed to be back in Oban one day I will not stay anywhere else. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Just enjoy the view from your suite, book an extra night so you have time to relax. Ferry to Kerrara and hike to Gylen Castle was a real highlight as it wasn't crowded and felt off the beaten path.

Absolutely beautiful house to stay. Our room was beautifully decorated & we loved the small touches, such as the welcome sherry, biscuits & drinks, as well as the fresh fruit in the morning & even sweeties by the front door. The accommodation is in a stunning location and at the quieter end of the town which was perfect for us.

We stayed 2 nights. Very handy for any ferry crossings. We highly recommend the restaurant EE-Usk at the north pier - superb food.

Very comfortable room, could not be improved, full view of loch and positioned at the quieter end of the promenade. Wi-Fi a little slow.

Location and view compensate for this being a room only guesthouse although a pastry can be ordered for room delivery. No 17 The Promenade worth booking for dinner. The two view points with the climb to , Etibe loch trip interesting and value for money.

Wonderful 2-night stay at Barriemore! We stayed in Room 5, which was nicely decorated, clean, and very comfortable. Mark and Jan provided great ideas for restaurants and activities in and near Oban, and we had a great time exploring the nearby islands. I wish we had stayed 3 days!

We loved Cuan Mor for dinner, and the coffee shop right next door had great coffee and pastries for breakfast. We bought tickets for the ferry and bus ride to Iona - great day trip!

I have regularly holidayed in Oban over the past 40 years, and only recently discovered the Barriemore, I'm so glad that I did. This historic house is absolutely beautiful inside and out. My room (Room 7) had a dual aspect with fabulous views of the shipping entering and leaving Oban Bay, as well as incredible sunsets to the North over the islands of Kerrera and Mull. Mark the owner is a really friendly and welcoming lad, I will be back at the Barriemore in September.

The Piazza restaurant on the Pier is really nice, however if you want to meet some of the local characters then pop over for dinner to the Royal Hotel on the Square it's well worth a visit, so is the Lorne Bar in Stevenson Street just around the corner from the Royal. Take the ferry to Craignure on the Isle of Mull, have lunch at the historic Craignure Inn, then catch the next ferry back to Oban, a great way to spend a few hours, and see some fabulous scenery. Oh and do not miss the Oban High School pipe band, when they play in the Square at night, seriously talented musicians all of them!

A beautiful house in a wonderful location. We loved our exceptionally comfortable room and the spectacular views of the bay and sunset.

We used the helpful list provided by the host to find places to eat. Julie’s coffee house was excellent. The nearby beach, Ganavan sands, was beautiful and a good place to visit on our short stay. We would like to come back to explore more and stay for longer.

This hotel was perfect for our stay. We had a large room, super comfy bed, adequate seating and luggage storage facilities. Great bathroom with walk in shower. Nice toiletries (not taken from room) Loved the sea view and being right on the promenade too. We had a great welcome, adequate parking, tea/coffee and biscuits. A lovely welcome and advice on best breakfast places too,

This hotel is a great location if you don't want to or cannot walk up and down hills. The views are terrific too. A few minutes walk to the Corran Halls and about 10 minutes walk to the town centre. Coasters provided a super breakfast at very reasonable rates. The lovely chocolate shop is worth a stop.

Brilliant location, lovely room with great decor and nice touches like sherry and fridge with tap water! Also an unexpected sea view which was a real bonus.

We had a great trip to Easdale Island which would highly recommend. In Oban itself, the cafe Kronks was really great to sit outside with a coffee in the sun. The seafood restaurant on the pier and the one in town opposite Waterstones (I've forgotten the name!) Both excellent. The walk up to McCraig Tower also well worth it. Love Oban in general; such a nice place.

After careful consideration, we chose to stay at the Barriemore for several reasons. First, the location is outstanding. The second was the appearance of the rooms in the photos and the third was the price. We were abundantly happy to see that our decision-making was right on point! This family run hotel is at the end of the row of hotels and bed-and-breakfast in Oban and just across a narrow road from the water. Our room was spacious, had very thick carpet, and a California king size bed. The first we’ve even seen in Scotland. I believe over here they might call super king. It’s what we have at home and it was very comfortable, had a down comforter and provided a solid 9 to 10 hours of sleep each night. The bathroom is large and has a big walk-in shower. All of the accessories and accoutrements are top-notch and well supplied. The towels are thick and fluffy, and the wall heater kept them nice and warm. A quick boil pot with coffee and tea supplies We’re waiting for us. There’s also a small fridge which is handy. Also, it was really quiet… Which is not always the case with those fridges. The views from our room were outstanding, and we had a double aspect. One window faced across the street to the ocean, and the other faced Out the side of the building across a house to another section of ocean. Both views were beautiful. There are a couple of large leather chairs and binoculars for your viewing pleasure. The room was super quiet, especially since we were on the very top floor. There is no elevator, so it is a walk up, but totally worth it. This hotel is running a slightly different manner than others you might be used to. Make sure you read their business model/check in policies and it will make complete sense. The benefit of this type of idea is that they’re able to give great prices compared to other places in the area. Restaurant choices are abundant, though they do tend to lean towards fish as you are right on the coast, and it is a fishing harbor. That said, there’s also some great local pubs within “stumbling distance“ 😂. We enjoyed every moment of our stay, and have no regrets whatsoever. We would highly recommend staying here for anybody who is going to be in Oban. If we ever return, we will book here for sure!

Be sure to eat at the Oban Seafood Hut (the green, one on the dock by the train station) best seafood in town and the best prices. Other than that, just hit up Google for local pubs and restaurants. The area is stuffed with them. The whole town is very walkable.

This is a great place to stay. Large room, really well presented and decorated. Good shower and bed. Many little extra touches to make you feel welcome. A little walk into town, but great views en route over the bay or from the terrace outside.

Would also thoroughly recommend and (evening) walk to Dunollie Castle (along the path) or the short trip to Ganavan sands.

What a gorgeous hotel! Beautiful views from our room to the Loch and islands. It is far enough away from the center of Oban to be quiet and feel away from the busy-ness. The room was so comfortable, spacious and beautifully appointed. I would go back in a heartbeat!

We can see how Oban could get pretty crowded during the peak months but it is definitely worth it. The easy access to island tours and the local attractions, plus great food, make it a great place to experience a Scottish port. Book your restaurants early, they aren't necessarily open or available when you want them. Dunollie Castle is a must do. And check out Lismore, a tiny island with a big heart.

Beautiful period property in a stunning location, with one of the best views in Oban. The house is spotlessly clean, very well appointed, and the room was spacious, very comfortable and quiet, ensuring a great sleep. Lots of lovely little features and touches throughout, including an Irn Bru & Tunnocks Caramel Wafer, complimentary sherry and fresh water. A very reasonable price for the very high standard of accomodation. A friendly goodbye from Mark will ensure our return in the very near future.

A visit to the seafood shack and the EE-Usk restaurant is a must if you are a seafood lover.

For eating, Ee-usk is always excellent and we had a good meal in Olive Garden as well. For breakfast/brunch, try Taste of Argyll or Julie’s kitchen. Don’t miss the Oban museum. It’s tucked out of the way on a corner on Corran Esplanade and appears deceptively small. A wealth of fascinating material well laid out and explained.

Great communication from date of booking including places to eat etc. Room was much better than I had imagined. It was very clean and modern with plentiful supplies of tea, coffee and even sherry. Bed was very comfortable and warm. Being able to take our dog was great and one of the reasons we booked. Would not hesitate to come back. Thanks for an amazing stay and we hope to visit again soon.

My wife and I enjoyed a lovely short stay in Oban at Barriemore accommodation. Perfect location on the shore in Oban bay and a beautifully presented, spacious room for 2 nights. Host communicated very well throughout and made our stay as straight-forward and enjoyable as possible. Would highly recommend this room only destination for a comfortable, pleasant place to rest your head at night. Oban is a lovely place to visit. Just wish the weather was better.

We didn't do much. Was very relaxing and comfortable. We did eat out a couple of times and would definitely recommend the Indian restaurant, Taj Mahal.

The time we had at Barriemore in Oban was a DREAM. I will hold this place close to my heart forever. The location, room with a view of the coast and the town itself was truly magical. We will certainly be back to visit and likely stay at Barriemore as many times as we can.

Mallaig Tower, Tartan Tavern, Oban Inn, and any of the seafood are must sees/stops. If you have a car, it’s only a short drive away to some Cairns and castles. Next time we will go to the island of Mull

This is our second stay at the Barriemore and will definitely be returning. We were initially booked to stay for 2 nights but the heavy rain caused road closures. A quick call to Jan and they put us back into our original room for another night. Jan was excellent in keeping guests informed of the road situation, contacting Traffic Scotland and Bear Scotland and provided useful update on road closures for our journey home. Jan and Mark truly care about their guests, going over and above to make sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. The check in/out system is efficient and works really well. Top quality tea, coffee and toiletries provided for our stay. The rooms are cleaned to a high standard especially for being a dog friendly hotel. Thank you for the warm hospitality and we look forward to staying again soon.

Really love staying here, location is brilliant, I booked a seaview which was stunning. Room was super clean, had a fridge full of refreshments which was much appreciated. Barriemore was excellent, great location with views from the hotel overlooking the sea. There is a conservatory where you can look at the view also benches at the front. Our room was on the first floor with a huge bed, powerful shower, great Scottish toiletries. There was a fridge in the room with cold water, tea and coffee and little touches like caramel wafers and iron bru and a ripple of sherry. 2 comfortable chairs and a little table. Loads of storage too

Oban distillery was well worth a visit.The whisky is nice. EE-usk was a lovely treat, a lovely fish restaurant, we booked prior to our visit The green hut on the pier next to the ferry was a great find, the seafood was great value for money and a friendly experience as there are 2 tables under cover Everyone we saw was really friendly
