Where do I start! From the off our welcome was so warm with a comprehensive tour of the Bunkhouse (we are Staying in similar on Tiree and have not had such a welcome!). The place was exceptionally clean, warm, and plenty of hanging/drying space which was needed! The communual area was large, warm and very well equipped. Would definitely stay again.

The kitchen/ living room is enormous and very clean and nicely fitted out. Plenty fridge and cupboard space. The showers are hot and very clean. The laundry facilities are good. There is a stove top coffee maker and there was even coffee. I replaced what I had. It was so quiet I had a very relaxing time.
Tips:The food at the hotel is very very good. They make their own sorbet! Also go to the Lighthouse gallery if you can find it. Its up the track behind the post office. Kip's artwork is fantastic. He can even give painting lessons for a fee.

We really enjoyed the good-sized spaces (bedroom, common room, toilet/shower), the good value (considering alternatives in Coll) and the possibility to have a table & chairs in the bedroom as well.
Tips:Watch out *locally* for opening hours of restaurants and shops. If possible, bring cooking essentials like oil, seasoning with you if you're planning on preparing food in the bunkhouse.

Very nice place to visit, nice and friendly staff, great they had ebikes for hire. Good location.
Tips:There's no public transport, so I had ask staff at the airport if they could give us a lift to and from the village and back to the airport, but not a problem. Hotel and cafe served good food and friendly. Flying to Coll was amazing, going out it stops at Tiree and was a great experience, would certainly recommend it.

10th January 2024:
The bunkhouse was spotless, comfortable and warm. The kitchen was very well equipped and there was also a good assortment of books, games, binoculars and local information and recommendations, plus some tips for stargazing, a great activity given Coll's Dark Sky status. We would definitely recommend the bunkhouse to other travellers.
Tips:My husband and I went in winter and found this an excellent time to travel - it felt like we had the island to ourselves (and we did have the bunkhouse to ourselves!). Be aware that it might be necessary to bring your own food - the Coll Hotel was the only place open for dinner, and that was closed on one of the nights we were here.

We were met personally on arrival and given a tour of the facilities and provided with all necessary information for our stay.
Tips:If you don’t have a car, hire a bike. The north west road is pretty undulating with steep sections in places so if not used to a bike, the electric ones available to hire via the Community Centre would be a good option. Let’s you get to the maximum number of beaches without miles of walking, as some are a bit off the main road.

9th June 2023:
Excellent comfortable place to stay. The only issue we had was with the showers which weren’t working at times. Ours didn’t work at night but did in the morning and our companions had to borrow our shower in the morning as theirs didn’t work. Maybe a problem with water pressure? Very handy location for the ferry.
Tips:Recommend a car to get around as it’s quite a hilly island with bumpy rough roads and not easy to cycle on. RSPB reserve worth a visit- beautiful walk to gorgeous Beall Beach with great views from the hill above it and a variety of birds to spot. The Island café near the Bunkhouse was lovely. Great food and friendly staff. Glad we were there on a Wednesday/Thursday as it’s closed on Monday/Tuesday

One of the best hostels in Scotland. Free wifi. Well equipped kitchen. Very clean. Washing facilities. All in a high standard. Matresses could be a bit better and a wee mirror light in the dorm room would be nice.
Tips:Coll Hotel has a nice beer garden. There is a wee store in the village. Cycling is a great way to explore the island. Bunkhouse rents out e-bikes which is great as roads are undulating. Normal bikes can be hired at post office. Shop and post office closed on Sunday though.

As with our stay last year, the bunkhouse was absolutely great. Met our needs completely. I would usually try to suggest potential improvements, but in this case I can't really as it was such a good stay. Having been here two years on the trot, we might want to give another island a go, but we will definitely return to Coll as it is such a lovely and welcoming place.

7th August 2022:
I stayed in one of the private rooms with my dog. The room was excellent, very spacious, with plenty storage space. It is also well equipped with a fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle. You have your own dining table and chairs in the room too. The beds are clean and comfortable, allowing for a great nights sleep after a day of exploring. The private room is allocated it’s own toilet and shower room which is great. The Bunkhouse also has a lovely shared kitchen, dining room and sitting room, this is where you will find books, games, binoculars etc that you can borrow. For a small fee, guests also have access to washing machines and tumble dryers. The Bunkhouse and its staff exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend a stay here.
Tips:If like me, you arrive when the Coll Show is scheduled, it’s worth going to, you’ll have a great day and everyone is extremely friendly. Top tip, visitors to the island are permitted to enter the competitions. My dog won the Best in Show pet competition. I enjoy walking so made sure I ventured to the top of Ben Hogh. Although it’s a small hill, the views are stunning. See as many of the beaches as you can, each and every one that I seen was absolutely beautiful and for many of them, I had them all to myself! There are two castles you can go and see, however they are private property so I kept my distance when taking photographs. Pop into Recycoll, it’s a little treasure trove and if you’re lucky, you might just meet Elaine, one of the islands wonderful residents. I ate in my room for the most part but did finish my trip with dinner at the Coll Hotel. The service and food was excellent. I was able to take my dog and we had a table with a lovely view into the garden and beyond. Booking in advance is recommended. I did end up changing my booking and the staff were very helpful with this. There is so much more to see and do on this island, I just didn’t have enough time. I will definitely be back next summer for a longer period of time…it’s a wonderful place that makes you feel instantly happy and content.

This was such an enjoyable hostel to stay in. Everyone was helpful when required.
Tips:As a solo wanderer, Infound the island surprisingly easy to get around with locals and visitors happy to give you a lift to the various beaches which were a bit further out for walking to. All the facilities were worth a visit, particularly the hotel and getting the opportunity to sit outside in such a wonderful setting was particularly memorable. The island of Coll may not have hills etc but taking time out for a few days to explore this local community and visit the many beaches was so peaceful and enjoyable. That is its one drawback you are dependent on lifts to help you reach the beaches as they are just too far away from many of us, Something to check out for another day. I will be back.

We enjoyed a very comfortable stay at Coll Bunkhouse, as a family of four with young children and a dog we had many needs to meet but we all enjoyed our stay. The Bunkhouse is clean and comfortable with modern facilities. The Friendly staff made us feel exceptionally welcome. The kitchen is well equipped and the living room area is comfortable and has lots of helpful resources for exploring the beautiful island. The community centre next door provided a lovely space with toys for the kids to have some down time. All in all I can highly recommend the Bunkhouse and we are all keen to return in the future.

Tips:Look for otters from the old pier, middle pier, and all along the shore to the CalMac pier. Look for otter tracks while watching seals at Cliadh Bay. Swim! (Sorisdale at high tide was particularly good). Keep an eye open for hen harriers. Go to local coffee mornings!

Fantastic stay, Chris was very accommodating, approachable and is an absolute credit to the island as the first friendly face you encounter. It has been a pleasure to stay. The generosity shown has been unbelievable and I very much look forward to visiting the island in the near future. I look forward to seeing the place grow with all the new and exciting ideas!

There has been a lot of thought gone into making the bunkhouse very comfortable for your use. My booking was seamless and everyone could not have been more helpful. If you have not used a bunkhouse before I heartily recommend it. Remember you are sharing the communal space with others but everyone is here to enjoy the beautiful surroundings .
Tips:Don’t tell anybody else about Coll keep it to yourself 😀 As the bunkhouse is located in Arinagour the shop, cafe, hotel, and post office is within walking distance. The village is itself is bang in the middle of the island to explore both east and west and explore you should… 😀 Be respectful to other residents.

I had a fantastic time at Coll Bunkhouse. Everything was clean, the kitchen is equipped with everything you need and there is plenty of space in the common room. The location is great, 15 minutes walk to the ferry Pier. Very close to the shops, to the pub and to the cafe as well. They also have electric bikes which allowed me to explore all the island even if I didn't have a car. I thought I could do with a normal bike, but I strongly recommend the electric ones! Chris was super helpful and he went above and beyond to ensure I had a good time on Coll.
Tips:I really liked the island cafe, great scones and deserts, just 5 minutes walking from the bunkhouse. From the bunkhouse you can visit nice places even without a car, you can walk to fiskery bay, and to Cliad Bay. For the furthest places you can just get a bike.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bunkhouse was very comfortable and well equiped. And being beside the Community Hall was very good. It is close to all necessary amenities - store PO. and Cafe and Hotel.
Tips:I will bring my bike next time as the island is a perfect size for cycling. I'm glad I brought certain foods as they were not at the store - but the basics eg potatoes/veg are there. The Cafe was only open at certain times - it being March - and so it will be good when it is open for longer - at Easter and beyond. Lovely beaches and walks and stars.

Absolutely fantastic in every aspect and would highly recommend to anyone. The service from the point of contact was exceptional and they could not do enough for us, they were so friendly and made you feel extremely welcome on arrival, Sarah is awesome. Spotlessly clean everywhere, every facility you could wish for and possibly some you not have even thought of. Thank you so much and I cannot wait to see you again for another adventure on the paradise island of Coll.
Tips:Book as far in advance for the restaurant and get out on the water as the marine life in Coll is extraordinary. There are also walking tours which looked great and are really inexpensive, just ask Sarah when you check in, I didn't have time on this trip but will definitely do next time. If you want to charter your own boat for an unforgettable experience, again ask Sarah for the phone number of John Frazer (hope I spelled his surname correctly). John is passionate, knowledgeable, friendly and his experience and ability in finding marine life is possibly unrivaled in my opinion, he is a lovely man.

Stupidly, when I checked the shower I didn't notice that the 'pay meter' switch outside the door (the top switch) had been switched off, which prevents the shower from working. Owner Response:Hello. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're glad you saw the corncrake. We took professional advice over the door closures and did change one as a trial, but the reality is they are very heavy fire doors, as required by legislation, and under certain conditions will slam harder than at other times. We do try and remember to ask customers to close the door, rather than let it close itself. Kind regards,

After the initial price hike for the sole occupancy we were a bit upset. However to have the place to ourselves was amazing! The facilities were in fact spectacular (for the money). It was great to not have access to a TV so we had to make our own entertinment and interact more, which is often missing in society nowadays.
Tips:Be advised that many people use the area around the bunk house that you wouldn't expect, so cars and walkers around the place might make guests nervous of leaving things around or unlocked etc.
Would Recommend: Yes
Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're glad you enjoyed the bunkhouse. It's unfortunate that, due to Covid restrictions around the number of people/households that can share facilities, our options are either to close or to operate more like a self-catering (but with a minimum nightly cost as we cannot run at a loss). We hope that situation won't last too long, but who knows... Thankfully we don't have a problem with crime on Coll, but guests can choose to lock the bunkhouse if they wish.

Everything about my stay in the Bunkhouse was 5-star. The staff are amazing and the facilities include everything you could possibly need, and more! Ideally located on this absolute gem of an island. Tips:November is Winter Season so there are reduced opening hours at the local cafe attached to the Tescoll Shop however the Coll Hotel is open for most of the day and is excellent. It is a short walk from the Bunk House. We arrived as foot passengers and were able to buy locally sourced food at Tescoll before going to the Post Office where we were able to hire bikes. The new community centre next door to the Bunk house is open until 9pm and houses a small library, meeting rooms, gym facilities, and has a cafe area where visitors can make a tea or coffee and put a donation in the honesty box. Wonderful bunkhouse and a lovely, warm welcome from Liz.
Tips:Make sure you book a bike to cycle around the island, especially if you don’t have a car. The pub/hotel is lovely with great views of the inlet and there is a fantastic little shop (next to the cafe) in the village stocking an amazing selection of ‘free from’ products.

Wonderful. It's also great that you don't have wifi in the dorms ! The kitchen would benefit from having a pan scourer or scraper or equivalent. I had difficulty cleaning the pan after making scrambled egg

Too many beds in the room so rather cramped and hard to move about. Door spring on room too tight causing it to slam noisily. A real pain at 1.00 am

Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to review our Bunkhouse. We're glad you found it to be a 5/5 premises and hope you enjoyed your time on Coll. There are 3 sets of bunk beds in two of the rooms and we would hope that our customers feel they have had the opportunity to look at the layout of these rooms on our website, or when booking via the booking system. We appreciate if you are travelling with a group that you may not have had this opportunity. We're sorry you found it rather cramped. Most of our customers find the locker space and space under the bed ample for luggage, which leaves the passageways clear. During most of the year these rooms are not full and you are, of course, visiting us at our busiest time. We have checked our door closure mechanisms in the past year to ensure they are the recommended settings for the weight of those doors, and the use to which the doors are put. As these are fire doors, and health and safety is our priority, we are limited in what we can do. One room has a different (and recommended) brand of door closure as we were trialling a different closure in case the original fittings were not adequate. However, what we have found is that if doors and windows are left open, and the door is left to close itself, then it may slam. We recommend that customers actively close the door behind them, and we will be putting up notices to reinforce this recommendation.

Everyone we met on Coll were really friendly and helpful. Bunkhouse is conveniently located not far from the ferry and a great central location to explore east and west ends of the island. The bunkhouse facilities were fantastic and the only thing that marred our stay was the weather. So I guess that's a good enough excuse to come back again to see the rest of the island!
Tips:Cooking facilities in bunkhouse were brilliant and had everything we needed. We brought most of the food we needed with us, which was just as well as local supplies in stores were limited. Had a lovely meal in the Hotel down the road from the bunkhouse. We brought our own bikes and cycled round the island. Roads were quiet and we found some amazing beaches.

excellent facilities with everything you need. the only thing I didn't like was that some of the doors in the rooms slammed very loudly when left to close by themselves. the closers could maybe do with some adjusting.
Would Recommend: Yes
Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to review our bunkhouse. As part of a trial, we recently invested in a new door closure in one of the rooms having spent quite some time researching this matter. The pre-installed closures do meet the recommendations for doors of that weight and purpose. The new door closure has its own issues at it makes that door much heavier and has a weightier 'close' even although it is less likely to slam if doors and windows are open. It seems the only solution, and we do try and remember to do it, is to ask customers to close the door rather than let the door close themselves.

Fantastic bunkhouse... I travelled with two friends (one who had stayed a few years ago) Jane and the team were friendly, welcoming and helpful both in person and in response to email requests. The bunkhouse is spotlessly clean and has everything you need. The location is excellent and the only negative was that we were only staying for one night! Can't wait to visit again. Thanks Jane (and Tim)

Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We're glad you have enjoyed the bunkhouse. We agree that it can be very sensible to bring some initial provisions with you until you learn what is available locally. However, we have two fantastic shops on the island that our customers can benefit from, with quite an enviable range of produce. Local produce can also be sourced depending on the time of year, such as veg, meat and seafood. Just ask locally. Our shops are happy to take pre-orders to collect on your arrival.

Owner Response:Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay on Coll. We hope you noted that our TV is not set up with an aerial and is therefore only for those who may wish to watch a DVD. It is generally not used by customers but, understandably, there are occasions when a customer may wish to watch something. Orders can be placed in advance for our main grocery shop, including fruit and veg. As a small island, it is not possible to have deliveries of fresh goods everyday but a quick call to the shop, or a chat with a local, will help you to find out which days the main deliveries come in. Both the Bunkhouse and the community centre have a sign displaying the hours for the shops, both of which tend to be open 6 mornings a week (as morning is when the main island traffic occurs due to the ferry) and then open several afternoons as well. We hope our customers will find this information useful in planning their stay.

Owner Response:Good afternoon, We are sorry you feel dissatisfied with our cancellation policy which allows for a full refund 28 days or more before arrival, and only a nominal charge for cancellations made 14 days or more before the booking. Our first response is generally to offer the customer to move their booking to another available date as we want our guests to be able to enjoy our wonderful island. The majority of our bookings are made over 2 months in advance of arrival and, as a small charity on a remote island, we are therefore rarely able to resell beds that are cancelled at short notice. We do not have the passing trade that mainland accommodations have. There are other circumstances where we may also provide full refunds. When booking with us, the terms and conditions are emailed out accompanying the booking confirmation and the email does ask customers to check this information.

Booked by telephone a few nights before arrival and paid the full money as asked giving my visa card over the phone for 4 x nights. On the morning of the 22nd May I asked if we could have a refund of £44 for the fourth night (Friday) as circumstances had changed we had to be back in Glasgow---we were told that no refund could be given which was a huge disappointment as this information had not been given over the phone. We were offered a twin room on the fourth night with the offer of not paying the extra £4 which we felt that we had to accept---anyway as I had a lot of business to do we left on the Friday morning with no refund or no choice of a free night if we ever returned to the isle of Coll. I will find out from the Scottish Tourist Board what our rights are under the circumstances. The noise of banging doors in the hostel was on-going which did not help us rest very well other than that it was a comfortable stay although there was no signal in the tv and we could not get wi fi as thought . kind Regards kerine and Stephen Rooney from Glagow

Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. As the bunkhouse was quite busy on Friday night, our staff took the decision to offer you the private room for no extra charge. The private room is very popular and is normally the first to book up but, as it was available, they decided to offer you that choice. While we are sorry you feel aggrieved by the lack of refund for a last minute cancellation, as a small island (and small charity) we rarely get passing trade and therefore are usually unable to resell beds if customers cancel at late notice. Our television is not intended to have a signal as consultation with previous visitors has established that this is not something most of our customers want, and some would find it intrusive on their holiday. Although Coll is very well connected with 4G, the internet signal for the village can dip in and out, we experience this ourselves in the office although it does generally work well with speeds of 6-8M download, which is the highest we can currently get.

I booked and paid for my stay 2 months in advance. My email confirmation said "check in time after 12" and as my ferry arrived at 10am I thought I would do a bit of exploring as I couldn't check in yet, so went off to one of the beaches. Arrived at the hostel at 4pm, to find a note on the door saying "check in between 12 and 3.30pm", after this time phone ………….. No mobile reception! Eventually got through to the number on a phone at the hotel, got answer machine. Left a message asking someone to come to the hostel to check me in. Went back to the hostel, to find a guy there, who had been told that he was the only one booked in to the hostel that night! After a few hours, he rang the number (he had reception on his mobile) he got the answer phone, so asked someone to either ring him or come to the hostel - got no reply. I then discovered, in the hostel brochure in the hallway, that the dorms were unisex, so made up a bed in the room that the guy was in - told him this when he came back from the pub. He said "ok". (The other two dorms were locked). Then about 10pm, as he was about to go to bed, he said to me "you've put me in an awkward position" so I said "what do you mean, how have I put you in an awkward position" and he said "well, I've got a key to the dorm, and you haven't. How do I know that you are supposed to be here?" I offered to show him my booking confirmation, but he refused to look at it. So in the end, I moved my bedding out of the dorm and slept on the sofa in the lounge! The next morning, Jane, one of the people who looks after the hostel, arrived. She had already spoken to the guy outside, said that she had got my message about 11pm the previous evening, had come to the hostel and we were all in bed (yes, I was in bed at that time but not asleep, I didn't hear anyone come in). She apologised, said that the other person who does the admin had told the guy that he was the only one booked in, and she was under the impression that I had been checked in. So not good communication between the staff, and not a good welcome to someone staying at the hostel.
Tips:Lovely beaches
Would Recommend: Yes
Owner Response:We do apologise for the difficulty you had. On booking, the system asks the customer to select a check in time, and we are able to see this on the booking. The standard confirmation, which is limited by the booking system, advises that check in is between 10 & 12 and the email confirmation advises that check in is based around ferry times. These check in times all coincide with staff being onsite to check our customers in. We have amended the email template to try and ensure it is made as clear as we can. It is unfortunate that Jane did not have a signal but that was outwith her control. Staff did communicate during the day and an attempt was made to phone customers who may not have checked in during the stated check in times but, as you noted, only 2 out of the 4 mobile service providers have a strong signal on Coll. Despite this unfortunate incident, we hope you enjoyed the island.

Tips:Great beaches along the north-west shore - we visited Hogh Bay and a beautiful small bay just north of the old burial ground. Cycling to Sorisdale at east end and a western loop via Hogh Bay and across the dunes track to Totronald (RSPB reserve). Cycling hilly in places (short but moderate climbs), but rewarding, especially with beach detours. Food at Coll Hotel very good - way more than simple 'pub grub'! - and a nice modern community centre (with events) next to bunkhouse.

Affordable place to stay on Coll, conveniently close to the ferry. Good, well-equipped kitchen. Can be a little cold at night outside summer. Sensitive smoke alarm in passage outside showers mean these should be used with caution. No resident warden, though the adjacent community centre stays open until 21:00 and help could be found there. Booking online requires a Paypal account, which does not suit all preferences.
Tips:Meals available at nearby hotel (being refurbished as of March 2019) and cafe (not always open in winter). Island has reasonable coastal walking, with plenty of sandy beaches and wildlife including seals and a variety of birds. Walking off-road can be hindered by rough ground (good footwear essential) and rather a lot of barbed-wire fencing.
Would Recommend: Yes
Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to review the bunkhouse. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay. To book online, you should not need a PayPal account. We contacted the booking site recently to discuss this, and tested the system ourselves. Although it uses PayPal facilities, it offered us the option to pay either using our PayPal account, or by card (which did not require you to logon or set up a PayPal account). We will look in to this again. Any customers who have concerns can pay over the phone, although the online booking system is more efficient. Our bunkhouse has modern insulation and adjustable heaters in every room. We are sorry if you found it a little colder, as we would have happily made any additional adjustments for you. We are not aware of the smoke alarm outside the showers ever having been activated by the showers, but we do (like many hotels) recommend keeping the doors closed to prevent steam escaping. We are all looking forward to the Coll Hotel extension opening, as it will be soon. The café was recently closed for a short period due to unforeseen circumstances but is open all year round, although for a variety of reasons it does not open 7 days during summer or winter.

We haven’t stayed in a bunkhouse before with the children so we weren’t sure how it was going to work but we had an amazing stay. We had our own room and the kitchen and living room are spacious so we never felt on top of other guests. The kitchen had everything we needed and the few shops on the island are 2 minutes away if you need to stock up. It was fun to meet new people at the bunkhouse and the kids loved it.
Tips:We bought just our bikes over on the ferry and didn’t miss the car! It’s about 4 hilly miles to a good sandy beach so kids need to be pretty confident. But we will never forget the beauty of Coll and it’s beaches. We live in Northumberland so we are spoilt for beaches but Colls are on a different level. The Coll Hotel is gorgeous for food, and the locals on Coll are so friendly and welcome - we didn’t want to leave!

Tips:Coll Hotel very good, but local cafes/shops limited on Coll (often only open a few hours a day) & expensive. Bring your own supplies from Oban or Tiree (great Co-op there), the Bunkhouse has a very good kitchen area with ample room & fridges.

We found our stay to be comfortable, clean, and above expectations. We arrived off the ferry a little early, before check-in, and we were allowed to leave our bags in the lobby and go look around while they finished cleaning our room. Everything was very clean and spacious. The kitchen is amazing - plenty of space for multiple families to cook and plenty of dishes and pans for all to use. We had an amazing time and have already told many people about our amazing stay.
Tips:We went of foot on the ferry, and that made getting around the island difficult. I would recommend bringing at least a bike (or car) or booking your rental on the island in advance.

Dedicated and thoughtful staff.
Tips:The Bunkhouse is in the centre of the main community on the island with short walks to shops and to an excellent hotel. It is a marvellous, clean and well-run modern building with washrooms, showers, adequate parking space. It is centred in the island with roads going to all different parts of the island. The island is bicycle friendly (though the weather might be challenging at times) and three RSPB sites on the island indicate the potential of what can be seen.

If I could have awarded 6 out of 5 for Service/Staff I would have. Couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. I think I have left a bit of my heart behind on Coll.
Tips:Booked 2 nights on Coll and 4 on Tiree but I wished I'd reversed that. Don't get me wrong, Tiree was great, but Coll is such a peaceful place and has maybe the friendliest people I have ever met. Apart from nature watching and walking there is almost nothing to do - which is wonderful. Don't forget your binoculars whenever you go out - you never know what may turn up.

Coll bunkhouse is one of my favourite places on all of the Hebrides. The building is so clean and modern, the kitchen is stocked with every utensil you could need, the kitchen is a beautiful bright room with lots of natural light and the bedroom was so comfortable and spacious. I couldn’t recommend this place enough - and it’s such great value. Fabulous bunkhouse. Extremely well equipped Great facilities in terms of the numbers of showers/toilets etc Great location as regards proximity to ferry port and eating places.
Tips:Both the Island Café and the Coll Hotel provide excellent food. One daughter is a macaroni cheese connoisseur and gave the mac cheese in the café an unheard of 9.5! We had 4 veggies in our party and they were all surprised at the range of veggie options. We only had 2 nights one full day on Coll so the 4x4 trip with Juliet was a great find for us as she was able to provide us with lots of information and transport round the island and to the beaches.

Thank you for a very pleasant stay. I was very impressed by your informality yet efficiency. First class facilities!
Tips:Best bring your bike or a car to explore the island, as by only walking you will have difficulty in exploring those special parts of the island that are harder to reach. You can stay in the house during the day – and also use the facilities in the adjoining Community Hall. Good for days when the weather isn’t too good! Probably the best “bunkhouse” in Scotland. Exceptional, well keep and modern hostel with everything you would need. The hostel is owned and operated by the local residents and there is a large community centre next door that is available for those staying. Staff were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I arrived late on a Saturday evening and all of the shops were closed but I was given a few supplies to keep me going by the proprietor. Hosteling with a difference...
Tips:All shops are closed on Sunday so if you arriving late on a Saturday make sure you bring supplies with you. Coll Hotel nearby offers fresh, tasty food with a view and sold at a good price considering the location. There is a cafe nearby which also has a shop attached, this is better value for money but not as salubrious. There are lots of walking routes on the island and details of these are on the information board at the Bunkhouse. The 12.5 mile Central route is wonderful and gives you the opportunity to see much of the best that Coll has to offer.

Amazing facility, staff couldn't be friendlier, loved the peace and quiet. Bike hire, places to eat, ferry port, shop all within walking distance, beautiful beaches everywhere, would love to come back in summer to see the wildlife.
Tips:Hire a bike and visit some of the beaches, last time we visited we were lucky enough to watch the seals, Island cafe serves lovely food, every Saturday there is a craft fayre in the village hall worth a visit for local produce, hand made jewellery, cards and a cuppa with the locals who will be more than happy to answer any questions about places to visit.

Owner Response:Thank you for your review. Although we have fantastic bird life all year round, the best time to see them is now (late-Apr to mid-May). This is when the corncrake arrives and the grass cover isn't fully grown yet. Also, lapwings displaying and hen harriers sky dancing. A trip in July offers less in the way of visible birdlife but is great for the colourful machair and basking sharks.

Highlights included otter spotting at the main pier, bagging Ben Houg & the erratic boulder, as well as the stunning beaches. Food wise, the seafood was so good at the Coll hotel we ended up making a second visit! The cafe served delicious hot chocolate & the adjacent shop has a wide range of interesting ingredients. I found all the staff really helpful and welcoming and unobtrusive. The accessibility to the Community Hall also added to the sense of space and facilities.
Tips:Obviously one of the main attractions of the Isle of Coll is its beautiful beaches but I was suprised at how difficult it was to access some of them. As I don't have a car or ride a bike, I was very reliant on others for transport, except to Cliad beach. Perhaps some information on this would be helpful so people can be forewarned. Both the Island Cafe and the Coll Hotel provide excellent food though the Cafe is only open at certain times. It might be helpful for people staying at the bunkhouse to know they should bring some essential food items with them as the food store is only open half time and has only basic supplies. However, I did pre-order some stocks from the shop before arriving, and brought some food items with me.

Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to review our bunkhouse. As you point out, many of our beaches are not 'road-side' although that does allow a privacy and 'another world' experience that you don't get on other beaches. I needed help to open it.
Tips:The Island Café in Arinagour is very good. The locals were friendly and helpful. There isn't a lot to do on the island other than enjoy the beautiful scenery. Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to review our community-run bunkhouse. We revised our check-in procedures to ask all customers to close the doors rather than just letting them go when fully open. Our primary concern is that these are fire doors and are required to 'seal' when shut. We are looking for softer closing options but need to ensure they would not interfere with fire safety. Many thanks

I have stayed in about 15 different hostels and this is just about as good as it gets. I would suggest the hostel adjusts the door closing systems throughout the hostel to stop the doors slamming. The toaster only toasts one side of the bread. Several people commented about the door slamming and toaster during my stay.
Would Recommend: Yes
Owner Response:Thank you for taking the time to review Coll Bunkhouse. The toaster was reported to the management team and swapped out immediately on reporting. We are looking in to the doors as they are fire doors and naturally it is of the utmost importance that we don't do anything that interferes with the seal at the point of closure. We try to remember to ask all customers at check-in to close the door rather than just letting it go.
