7th September 2020:

After the initial price hike for the sole occupancy we were a bit upset. However to have the place to ourselves was amazing! The facilities were in fact spectacular (for the money). It was great to not have access to a TV so we had to make our own entertinment and interact more, which is often missing in society nowadays.

Tips:

Be advised that many people use the area around the bunk house that you wouldn't expect, so cars and walkers around the place might make guests nervous of leaving things around or unlocked etc.

Owner Response:

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're glad you enjoyed the bunkhouse. It's unfortunate that, due to Covid restrictions around the number of people/households that can share facilities, our options are either to close or to operate more like a self-catering (but with a minimum nightly cost as we cannot run at a loss). We hope that situation won't last too long, but who knows... Thankfully we don't have a problem with crime on Coll, but guests can choose to lock the bunkhouse if they wish.

Everything about my stay in the Bunkhouse was 5-star. The staff are amazing and the facilities include everything you could possibly need, and more! Ideally located on this absolute gem of an island. A definite highlight of my trip so far, and I am already looking forward to planning my next visit. Alison and Liz, thank you so much for the warm welcome and the perfect introduction to this beautiful part of the world.

Tips:

Coll is a stunning landscape and has an array of beautiful beaches to explore. The seals on Cliad beach are definitely worth a visit, and there is plenty more amazing wildlife to see on the island. The hotel serves great food and is conveniently located just across the road from the Bunkhouse. The local store also sells a great selection of products if you prefer to cook for yourself. The community hub, An Cridhe, also hosts a number of different events throughout the year, as well as housing the islands gym. You will never be short of things to do or see on the island and you will most likely be planning your return visit before you even leave!

Fantastic hostel, clean, warm (for a January stay) and modern. Best is the helpfulness and loveliness of the bunkhouse (and adjacent community centre)people - and Coll in general. We got 'stuck' (check your ferries!) and it was the people as well as the rugged Coll landscape that made that such a pleasure.

Tips:

Check ferries before travel! Coll is a lovely island and lots to explore.

The Staff are based at the new community centre next door to the Bunk house. They were most helpful. We were able to leave our lugguage in the Community Centre on our rather early arrival (due to ferry time change.

Tips:

November is Winter Season so there are reduced opening hours at the local cafe attached to the Tescoll Shop however the Coll Hotel is open for most of the day and is excellent. It is a short walk from the Bunk House. We arrived as foot passengers and were able to buy locally sourced food at Tescoll before going to the Post Office where we were able to hire bikes. The new community centre next door to the Bunk house is open until 9pm and houses a small library, meeting rooms, gym facilities, and has a cafe area where visitors can make a tea or coffee and put a donation in the honesty box. There are some gifts for sale.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to review the Bunkhouse. We're glad you enjoyed your time on Coll. We do apologise that you found the bed uncomfortable. Usually we hear from customers how comfortable the beds are, so we would be grateful if you could email us at info@collbunkhouse.co.uk to advise which bed you were sleeping in so we can check it? My colleagues may know which bed you were in but I am alone in the office today and about to leave the island so I won't see them for some time. Kind regards,

Owner Response:

Thank you for taking the time to review our Bunkhouse. We're glad you found it to be a 5/5 premises and hope you enjoyed your time on Coll. There are 3 sets of bunk beds in two of the rooms and we would hope that our customers feel they have had the opportunity to look at the layout of these rooms on our website, or when booking via the booking system. We appreciate if you are travelling with a group that you may not have had this opportunity. We're sorry you found it rather cramped. Most of our customers find the locker space and space under the bed ample for luggage, which leaves the passageways clear. During most of the year these rooms are not full and you are, of course, visiting us at our busiest time. We have checked our door closure mechanisms in the past year to ensure they are the recommended settings for the weight of those doors, and the use to which the doors are put. As these are fire doors, and health and safety is our priority, we are limited in what we can do. One room has a different (and recommended) brand of door closure as we were trialling a different closure in case the original fittings were not adequate. However, what we have found is that if doors and windows are left open, and the door is left to close itself, then it may slam. We recommend that customers actively close the door behind them, and we will be putting up notices to reinforce this recommendation.

8th August 2019:

Everyone we met on Coll were really friendly and helpful. Bunkhouse is conveniently located not far from the ferry and a great central location to explore east and west ends of the island. The bunkhouse facilities were fantastic and the only thing that marred our stay was the weather. So I guess that's a good enough excuse to come back again to see the rest of the island!

Tips:

Cooking facilities in bunkhouse were brilliant and had everything we needed. We brought most of the food we needed with us, which was just as well as local supplies in stores were limited. Had a lovely meal in the Hotel down the road from the bunkhouse. We brought our own bikes and cycled round the island. Roads were quiet and we found some amazing beaches.

Owner Response:

Thank you for taking the time to review our bunkhouse. As part of a trial, we recently invested in a new door closure in one of the rooms having spent quite some time researching this matter. The pre-installed closures do meet the recommendations for doors of that weight and purpose. The new door closure has its own issues at it makes that door much heavier and has a weightier 'close' even although it is less likely to slam if doors and windows are open. It seems the only solution, and we do try and remember to do it, is to ask customers to close the door rather than let the door close themselves.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We're glad you have enjoyed the bunkhouse. We agree that it can be very sensible to bring some initial provisions with you until you learn what is available locally. However, we have two fantastic shops on the island that our customers can benefit from, with quite an enviable range of produce. Local produce can also be sourced depending on the time of year, such as veg, meat and seafood. Just ask locally. Our shops are happy to take pre-orders to collect on your arrival.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay on Coll. We hope you noted that our TV is not set up with an aerial and is therefore only for those who may wish to watch a DVD. It is generally not used by customers but, understandably, there are occasions when a customer may wish to watch something. Orders can be placed in advance for our main grocery shop, including fruit and veg. As a small island, it is not possible to have deliveries of fresh goods everyday but a quick call to the shop, or a chat with a local, will help you to find out which days the main deliveries come in. Both the Bunkhouse and the community centre have a sign displaying the hours for the shops, both of which tend to be open 6 mornings a week (as morning is when the main island traffic occurs due to the ferry) and then open several afternoons as well. We hope our customers will find this information useful in planning their stay.

Good afternoon, We are sorry you feel dissatisfied with our cancellation policy which allows for a full refund 28 days or more before arrival, and only a nominal charge for cancellations made 14 days or more before the booking. Our first response is generally to offer the customer to move their booking to another available date as we want our guests to be able to enjoy our wonderful island. The majority of our bookings are made over 2 months in advance of arrival and, as a small charity on a remote island, we are therefore rarely able to resell beds that are cancelled at short notice. We do not have the passing trade that mainland accommodations have. There are other circumstances where we may also provide full refunds. When booking with us, the terms and conditions are emailed out accompanying the booking confirmation and the email does ask customers to check this information.

Booked by telephone a few nights before arrival and paid the full money as asked giving my visa card over the phone for 4 x nights. On the morning of the 22nd May I asked if we could have a refund of £44 for the fourth night (Friday) as circumstances had changed we had to be back in Glasgow---we were told that no refund could be given which was a huge disappointment as this information had not been given over the phone. We were offered a twin room on the fourth night with the offer of not paying the extra £4 which we felt that we had to accept---anyway as I had a lot of business to do we left on the Friday morning with no refund or no choice of a free night if we ever returned to the isle of Coll. I will find out from the Scottish Tourist Board what our rights are under the circumstances. The noise of banging doors in the hostel was on-going which did not help us rest very well other than that it was a comfortable stay although there was no signal in the tv and we could not get wi fi as thought . kind Regards kerine and Stephen Rooney from Glagow

Owner Response:

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. As the bunkhouse was quite busy on Friday night, our staff took the decision to offer you the private room for no extra charge. The private room is very popular and is normally the first to book up but, as it was available, they decided to offer you that choice. While we are sorry you feel aggrieved by the lack of refund for a last minute cancellation, as a small island (and small charity) we rarely get passing trade and therefore are usually unable to resell beds if customers cancel at late notice. Our television is not intended to have a signal as consultation with previous visitors has established that this is not something most of our customers want, and some would find it intrusive on their holiday. Although Coll is very well connected with 4G, the internet signal for the village can dip in and out, we experience this ourselves in the office although it does generally work well with speeds of 6-8M download, which is the highest we can currently get.

Very relaxed & friendly.

Tips:

Couldn’t recommend bunkhouse highly enough. Great meals st Island Cafe & Coll Hotel. Can also buy provisions in shop to make delicious meal in bunkhouse kitchen. Bring bike if poss instead of car as best way to experience Island. Cycle to Feall Bay, & Torastan Bay is an absolute must, & pick up any plastic you see while you’re at it. #pawsonplastic. The islanders do.

The bedrooms were a bit tight but I loved Coll bunkhouse. The cleanliness of the whole place was excellent. The showers were spacious, the eating and relaxing areas were spacious, and spotless. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Situated near a very useful and friendly shop, and a small cafe. My phone didn't work( network 3). Would love to return. Local people are wonderful.

Tips:

Be aware your phone network may not work. I loved the walks on coll, North to see the seals at Claid Bay,7 miles return, climbing Ben Hogh forlunch, with faint paths, and the circular road walk, long for me, but I made it!

23rd May 2019:

I booked and paid for my stay 2 months in advance. My email confirmation said "check in time after 12" and as my ferry arrived at 10am I thought I would do a bit of exploring as I couldn't check in yet, so went off to one of the beaches. Arrived at the hostel at 4pm, to find a note on the door saying "check in between 12 and 3.30pm", after this time phone ………….. No mobile reception! Eventually got through to the number on a phone at the hotel, got answer machine. Left a message asking someone to come to the hostel to check me in. Went back to the hostel, to find a guy there, who had been told that he was the only one booked in to the hostel that night! After a few hours, he rang the number (he had reception on his mobile) he got the answer phone, so asked someone to either ring him or come to the hostel - got no reply. I then discovered, in the hostel brochure in the hallway, that the dorms were unisex, so made up a bed in the room that the guy was in - told him this when he came back from the pub. He said "ok". (The other two dorms were locked). Then about 10pm, as he was about to go to bed, he said to me "you've put me in an awkward position" so I said "what do you mean, how have I put you in an awkward position" and he said "well, I've got a key to the dorm, and you haven't. How do I know that you are supposed to be here?" I offered to show him my booking confirmation, but he refused to look at it. So in the end, I moved my bedding out of the dorm and slept on the sofa in the lounge! The next morning, Jane, one of the people who looks after the hostel, arrived. She had already spoken to the guy outside, said that she had got my message about 11pm the previous evening, had come to the hostel and we were all in bed (yes, I was in bed at that time but not asleep, I didn't hear anyone come in). She apologised, said that the other person who does the admin had told the guy that he was the only one booked in, and she was under the impression that I had been checked in. So not good communication between the staff, and not a good welcome to someone staying at the hostel.

Tips:

Lovely beaches

Owner Response:

We do apologise for the difficulty you had. On booking, the system asks the customer to select a check in time, and we are able to see this on the booking. The standard confirmation, which is limited by the booking system, advises that check in is between 10 & 12 and the email confirmation advises that check in is based around ferry times. These check in times all coincide with staff being onsite to check our customers in. We have amended the email template to try and ensure it is made as clear as we can. It is unfortunate that Jane did not have a signal but that was outwith her control. Staff did communicate during the day and an attempt was made to phone customers who may not have checked in during the stated check in times but, as you noted, only 2 out of the 4 mobile service providers have a strong signal on Coll. Despite this unfortunate incident, we hope you enjoyed the island.

Very friendly and helpful staff and a flexible approach to individual travellers needs. The location next to the community centre was also useful.

Tips:

It might be useful to know there are two shops nearby, because the one by the Island Cafe has a very different range of foods than the other one and is open until 5pm rather than 12.30, also open on Sunday! They are also very friendly and helpful.

Exceedingly helpful staff, beautifully clean and well organised, a gem of a place. Plenty of information available at the amazing community centre next door to bunkhouse.

Tips:

Birdwatching highlights: cuckoos in May, hen harriers, the occasional sea eagle, corncrakes in summer. Seals in the harbour, sometimes Dolphins. Hares in the fields. Varied landscape, beautiful sandy beaches, stunning views and the constantly changing colours of the sea. Very good cafe & shop in village, good food at the hotel. No bus service, so hire a bike or take your vehicle so you can reach those parts of the island you want to explore on foot.

Lovely kitchen/dining/sitting area with good light throughout day. Great location, close to shops and hotel (with it's lovely new restaurant), yet surrounded by nature - lapwings, geese and song thrushes calling just outside.

Tips:

Great beaches along the north-west shore - we visited Hogh Bay and a beautiful small bay just north of the old burial ground. Cycling to Sorisdale at east end and a western loop via Hogh Bay and across the dunes track to Totronald (RSPB reserve). Cycling hilly in places (short but moderate climbs), but rewarding, especially with beach detours. Food at Coll Hotel very good - way more than simple 'pub grub'! - and a nice modern community centre (with events) next to bunkhouse.

29th March 2019:

Affordable place to stay on Coll, conveniently close to the ferry. Good, well-equipped kitchen. Can be a little cold at night outside summer. Sensitive smoke alarm in passage outside showers mean these should be used with caution. No resident warden, though the adjacent community centre stays open until 21:00 and help could be found there. Booking online requires a Paypal account, which does not suit all preferences.

Tips:

Meals available at nearby hotel (being refurbished as of March 2019) and cafe (not always open in winter). Island has reasonable coastal walking, with plenty of sandy beaches and wildlife including seals and a variety of birds. Walking off-road can be hindered by rough ground (good footwear essential) and rather a lot of barbed-wire fencing.

Owner Response:

Thank you for taking the time to review the bunkhouse. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay. To book online, you should not need a PayPal account. We contacted the booking site recently to discuss this, and tested the system ourselves. Although it uses PayPal facilities, it offered us the option to pay either using our PayPal account, or by card (which did not require you to logon or set up a PayPal account). We will look in to this again. Any customers who have concerns can pay over the phone, although the online booking system is more efficient. Our bunkhouse has modern insulation and adjustable heaters in every room. We are sorry if you found it a little colder, as we would have happily made any additional adjustments for you. We are not aware of the smoke alarm outside the showers ever having been activated by the showers, but we do (like many hotels) recommend keeping the doors closed to prevent steam escaping. We are all looking forward to the Coll Hotel extension opening, as it will be soon. The café was recently closed for a short period due to unforeseen circumstances but is open all year round, although for a variety of reasons it does not open 7 days during summer or winter.

We haven’t stayed in a bunkhouse before with the children so we weren’t sure how it was going to work but we had an amazing stay. We had our own room and the kitchen and living room are spacious so we never felt on top of other guests. The kitchen had everything we needed and the few shops on the island are 2 minutes away if you need to stock up. It was fun to meet new people at the bunkhouse and the kids loved it.

Tips:

We bought just our bikes over on the ferry and didn’t miss the car! It’s about 4 hilly miles to a good sandy beach so kids need to be pretty confident. But we will never forget the beauty of Coll and it’s beaches. We live in Northumberland so we are spoilt for beaches but Colls are on a different level. The Coll Hotel is gorgeous for food, and the locals on Coll are so friendly and welcome - we didn’t want to leave!

We found our stay to be comfortable, clean, and above expectations. We arrived off the ferry a little early, before check-in, and we were allowed to leave our bags in the lobby and go look around while they finished cleaning our room. Everything was very clean and spacious. The kitchen is amazing - plenty of space for multiple families to cook and plenty of dishes and pans for all to use. We had an amazing time and have already told many people about our amazing stay.

Coll bunkhouse is one of my favourite places on all of the Hebrides. The building is so clean and modern, the kitchen is stocked with every utensil you could need, the kitchen is a beautiful bright room with lots of natural light and the bedroom was so comfortable and spacious. I couldn’t recommend this place enough - and it’s such great value. Having such lovely accommodation was part of the reason I completely fell in love with the Isle of Coll and it’s great sense of community . I can’t wait to return .

Fabulous bunkhouse. Extremely well equipped Great facilities in terms of the numbers of showers/toilets etc Great location as regards proximity to ferry port and eating places.

Tips:

Both the Island Café and the Coll Hotel provide excellent food. One daughter is a macaroni cheese connoisseur and gave the mac cheese in the café an unheard of 9.5! We had 4 veggies in our party and they were all surprised at the range of veggie options. We only had 2 nights one full day on Coll so the 4x4 trip with Juliet was a great find for us as she was able to provide us with lots of information and transport round the island and to the beaches.

Thank you for a very pleasant stay. I was very impressed by your informality yet efficiency. First class facilities!

Tips:

Best bring your bike or a car to explore the island, as by only walking you will have difficulty in exploring those special parts of the island that are harder to reach. You can stay in the house during the day – and also use the facilities in the adjoining Community Hall. Good for days when the weather isn’t too good! Probably the best “bunkhouse” in Scotland. Read the Notice Board so you don’t get caught out with odd closing times: shop, café, post office, etc.

Exceptional, well keep and modern hostel with everything you would need. The hostel is owned and operated by the local residents and there is a large community centre next door that is available for those staying. Staff were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I arrived late on a Saturday evening and all of the shops were closed but I was given a few supplies to keep me going by the proprietor. Hosteling with a difference...

Tips:

All shops are closed on Sunday so if you arriving late on a Saturday make sure you bring supplies with you. Coll Hotel nearby offers fresh, tasty food with a view and sold at a good price considering the location. There is a cafe nearby which also has a shop attached, this is better value for money but not as salubrious. There are lots of walking routes on the island and details of these are on the information board at the Bunkhouse. The 12.5 mile Central route is wonderful and gives you the opportunity to see much of the best that Coll has to offer.

Tips:

Thank you for your review. Although we have fantastic bird life all year round, the best time to see them is now (late-Apr to mid-May). This is when the corncrake arrives and the grass cover isn't fully grown yet. Also, lapwings displaying and hen harriers sky dancing. A trip in July offers less in the way of visible birdlife but is great for the colourful machair and basking sharks.

Tips:

We enjoyed exploring by bike & foot- so many beautiful places to see. Highlights included otter spotting at the main pier, bagging Ben Houg & the erratic boulder, as well as the stunning beaches. Food wise, the seafood was so good at the Coll hotel we ended up making a second visit! The cafe served delicious hot chocolate & the adjacent shop has a wide range of interesting ingredients. The only thing we found a bit tricky was getting fresh veg- a tip is to get to the local store early. On return to Oban we ate at the fab Oban seafood hut- a delicious end to a great trip.

I found all the staff really helpful and welcoming and unobtrusive. The accessibility to the Community Hall also added to the sense of space and facilities.

Tips:

Obviously one of the main attractions of the Isle of Coll is its beautiful beaches but I was suprised at how difficult it was to access some of them. As I don't have a car or ride a bike, I was very reliant on others for transport, except to Cliad beach. Perhaps some information on this would be helpful so people can be forewarned. Both the Island Cafe and the Coll Hotel provide excellent food though the Cafe is only open at certain times. It might be helpful for people staying at the bunkhouse to know they should bring some essential food items with them as the food store is only open half time and has only basic supplies. However, I did pre-order some stocks from the shop before arriving, and brought some food items with me.

Thank you for taking the time to review our bunkhouse. As you point out, many of our beaches are not 'road-side' although that does allow a privacy and 'another world' experience that you don't get on other beaches. I needed help to open it.

Tips:

The Island Café in Arinagour is very good. The locals were friendly and helpful. There isn't a lot to do on the island other than enjoy the beautiful scenery. Thank you for taking the time to review our community-run bunkhouse. We revised our check-in procedures to ask all customers to close the doors rather than just letting them go when fully open. Our primary concern is that these are fire doors and are required to 'seal' when shut. We are looking for softer closing options but need to ensure they would not interfere with fire safety. Many thanks

Thank you for taking the time to review Coll Bunkhouse. The toaster was reported to the management team and swapped out immediately on reporting. We are looking in to the doors as they are fire doors and naturally it is of the utmost importance that we don't do anything that interferes with the seal at the point of closure. We try to remember to ask all customers at check-in to close the door rather than just letting it go.

The Gannet resturant at the Coll Hotel has seafood to die for. Shops aren't open every day so take some essentials. It was sunny every day I was there but it won't always be. Pack waterproofs and a good book. Prepare to chill on Coll. It's very relaxing.

Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Always a pleasure to stay here & Coll itself has so many treasures to explore - so many hidden beaches. The local community always go out of their way to be helpful. Perfect for a cycling holiday. Why go anywhere else?

Tips:

The Island Cafe is a must - delicious food, reasonable prices, good atmosphere. Book a table though - it's v popular with locals too. Struan Bay def worth a visit. And Red Rock Bay. Just look on map & find them. The hotel does delicious seafood chowder. Stock up in their local shop too - lots of good things to eat. Buy on the island instead of Tesco's on mainland!!!! Failt Bay also beautiful. Make an effort to explore...

We arrived as a party of 3 within a party of 12 + 1, on ribs. Wandered around the Island a bit. A spectacular Island from the sea, with seals, dolphins and minky whales popping up to say hello. Restaurant within the hotel is def worth a visit. The locals were very welcoming and included us in their group within the hotel bar.

Excellent place to stay on Coll! Many thanks Jane.

Tips:

Before leaving one of the many beautiful beaches, pick up whatever washed up plastic you can carry and take it back to Arinagour and put it in the plastic recycling bin at the middle pier. It's a constant wave of rubbish being wasked up, but if every visitor brings at least 1 piece of trash back it will make a big impact.

Loved our stay at Coll Bunkhouse and found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. Also, we were pleased that we could pop into the Community Centre. The information there was very interesting and we very much enjoyed a practice session by the local folk group.

Tips:

We were very lucky on arrival to have the opportunity of a guided tour round the island by Juliet, who pointed out local landmarks and told us the history of the island. We would not have been able to see so much on foot. We saw lots of wildlife and actually spotted the very shy corncrake. As we were not carrying food with us, we ate at the Coll Hotel. Unfortunately the Café (where we planned to have breakfast) was closed on a Monday. However, we were able to have tea and toast at the Coll Hotel.

This is a fantastic facility. It is very robust and well made. It's location is great - attached to the community centre. It is also within walking distance to a great wee pub with great food, within walking distance to the ferry and right beside the roads that take you to all destinations on the island. The staff are lovely, genuine people who are hospitable, very knowledgeable and helpful with advice about any aspect of your trip.

Tips:

The wee shop in the village - like most other Scottish islands - has restricted opening hours; so either bring food for the first day or time your visit for opening times..or even better go to the adjacent pub for dinner and (book) breakfast !

What a beautiful hostel, Island and people. So kind and hospitable, and cheerful. Especially Diane . Only downside was confusion about dog and being given differing information. The space that was designated for the dog to sleep - the hallway. Was so very cold. So dog had to sleep in the lounge area. Perhaps, providing a warmer place for them to sleep should the lounge be out of bounds. Otherwise all fabulous.

Wonderful stay as on previous visit in Sept. 2013). I'm so glad that I found out about the bunkhouse from Jane & Tim when we first met on S Uist in 2012 (being in the SYHA Guide saved having to do a search). Coll is one of my favourite islands.

Tips:

Go to Sorisdale and explore the beach and headlands. Feall Bay is beautiful. Cliadh - seals on rocks close to shore. Walk along the coast from Cliadh to Torastan. Cycle everywhere too. Beautiful shore at Loch Gortan. Otter - Middle Pier & Old Pier, or along the way to the ferry. Use all the local services - contributing to the local economy helps everyone! Look out for orchids, bloody cranesbill, corncrakes.......

Brilliantly located, comfortable, warm and a far better kitchen that I have at home. Welcome was spot on and with the community centre next door, there was lots to see and do. Free internet at the Bunkhouse was good but you're missing out if you feel you have to spend the evening catching up on news elsewhere. The long summer nights and big skies are unforgettable.

Tips:

You can cycle round the island if you're prepared to push occasionally along the track across the machair. The Island Cafe at Arinagour offers delicious food and the adjacent T.E.S.Co is a cornucopia of delicacies that you'd be hard pushed to find in most Scottish cities. Brilliant effort! Go off road to find the most awesome beaches and locations. Look out for events at An Cridhe, the community centre where we were made to feel very welcome.

Great facility and a well equipped bunkhouse. Piping hot water on demand and well resourced, as I had forgotten my binoculars and could use the ones in the bunkhouse. Staff were very polite and helpful. It was good that there is a cupboard of 'free food', which people can use in emergencies. Although I had brought some food to get us over the first 24 hours, it was very helpful.

Tips:

Make sure you come with food plans as the shop on the island has restricted opening hours and won't have everything you probably want. The Coll Hotel has a good restaurant but is of course expensive. We hired kayaks for a few hours - contact Carol Ann Flett in advance - poster on wall of bunkhouse, or also via Bunkhouse website. Good value. Cliad beach is stunning and only 30 mins on bike from Arinagour on the north road. Feall Bay also stunning and worth a look. Everyone on the island is very friendly, but make sure you have all the shopping you need the day before as the food shops only open at 10am!! And check ferry times in case of last minute cancellations! Remember that you are on an island and you'll enjoy it!

Enjoy the wonderful sense of community that is so evident on Coll. Not advertised - on the way to the Project Trust base (around Clabhach) is a roadside 'barn' with a wonderful display of photographs and interesting found objects. On our return we all managed a further shower in the community facilities, despite the big day and wedding for Eloise and George - thank you for making us so welcomed.

Tips:

Eat out in the cafe and enjoy their deli.

Beautiful place to stay on a lovely island. Thank you so much!

Tips:

Check An Cridhe for activities and music/shows etc. We managed to catch one while on the island. Had a lovely lunch in the Island Cafe and a fab dinner in the Coll Hotel (great crab claws which entertained the other diners!) You need to get off the beater track (road to find lovely beaches and wildlife)

I was impressed with your prompt help when the hot water went on strike. VERY minor! - it would have been nice to look at the famous night sky on midnight visits to the loo, but the bathroom area lights came on automatically!! Loved the island, the friendly people, the mostly helpful and cycle friendly drivers; the weather was superb which shows the island at its best.

The bunkhouse is very modern and clean and the beds comfortable. The location is great because near to shops hotel cafe etc. Staff were great too and you don't get kicked out in the day like some places. I would say it was like a 4star hostel. The only thing negative is that the 6bed room is a bit tight.

Tips:

The beaches are beautiful and very quiet with lots of seals to be seen. We were cycling around and roads were quiet. If you like to get away somewhere peaceful and like bird watching this is a good island. It is usually quite breezy which keep the midges away although it was May when we visited.

An excellent facility and lovely place to stay.

Tips:

The Coll hotel is very close if you don't want to cook, however menu is heavily biased toward seafood. Good kids menu as well. The best way to see the island is by bicycle which you can hire on the island. The flight from Oban is only about £35 each way which is great value (we came on the ferry with our own bikes but spoke to a fellow traveller who flew over and it sounded great)

Excellent modern bunkhouse located in Arinagour village. Friendly staff based in the adjacent An Cnoc centre were very helpful with local advice and support when needed making my stay very enjoyable.

Tips:

Coll Hotel for good beer and excellent food. I cycled round the island in a clockwise direction. great views and fab beaches at Crossapol and Feall. Visited the RSPB visitor centre which was unfortunately closed for renovation. Don't be put off by the continuation on to the sandy path to The Hebridean Centre - its 2K, a bike push but lets you continue your circular route. Stop at the highest point on your route and climb the dunes to Hough beach - a magic place. Enjoy.

Just the most wonderful bunkhouse I've stayed in. Clean, contemporary design and facilities in great communal cooking/living area, simple, clean bedrooms and lots of loos and showers. Very helpful staff when booking and and arrving to the bunkhouse. Lovely big French doors to outside to soak up the sunshine. Couldn't recommend the Coll Bunkhouse highly enough, in fact already told half the world. Considered keeping it a secret but decided that's not fair, so enjoy!!x

Tips:

You can hire bikes next to the Post Office from Fraser for £20 day. Well worth it to visit the lovely beaches of which there are apparently 23! You can take cash out with your card at the Post Office. There's a fabulous shop called the Ethical Store (T.E.S.C.O) in the centre of the village which has the most amazing collection of things, like an ethical Fortnum & Masons with everything you could wish for - from marinated red peppers, spices, jams, middle eastern sauces, organic drinks, local cheeses, handmade soaps, herbal remedies, drip candles, really everything! The owner is lovely; there's a cafe next door which was closed when we went, but as it's run by the same people I expect it would have a delicious menu.

Of all the bunkhouses I've stayed in, this one if by far the most comfortable and fully deserves a 5 star rating. The 6 bed dorm that I was in, is on the small side but as it was low season I was lucky and had the whole room to myself. The lounge, kitchen and shower facilities are top notch. Really nice place to stay and excellent value for money.

Tips:

This was my first solo cycle trip. I only had two days on the island but it was great. The distance from the ferry to the bunkhouse is minimal and the bunkhouse is close to the two shops, post office and hotel. Bar staff were welcoming and the meal I had in the hotel was delicious. People I met were friendly and smiley. I cycled and walked in the north and south of the island and loved visiting some of the beautiful beaches and giant sand dunes. My one concern was that my road bike does not take well to loose stones/pot holes and some sections of the roads were a bit dodgy. All in all though, there's no doubt about it ; there's lots more to see by day and many more amazing skies to watch at night- I'll be back for sure.

A small covered area for storing bikes would be great if possible. Lots of good info re Coll and local amenities/opening times etc

30th May 2015:

The bunkhouse was perfect for a full booking. Had a great time. great sleep too and excellent staff. We'll be back! Comments regarding the island. Each island has a different way of managing visitors. On another island any booking for accommodation is followed up by an email from a local shop with a link to a list of items that can be requested so most shopping is done on the island. If unavailable then you receive an email on the day so you can buy before boarding the ferry. Makes travelling easier and ensures the visitor spends money. For the Tuesday ferry the shops all close minutes before ferry landing and as one shop is closed on Wednesday it's better to shop before leaving Oban. This meant 17 people staying on the island for 4 days needed just one pint of milk from the shop for the whole stay. A recent booking on Colonsay was followed up with invitations to events going on that week so you can plan and be more involved. We brought a 6-year old Katie Morag fan. It would only need to be make believe but maybe a walk that included places that referred to the books such as the bog where the prize sheep fell in. It would link the island to the books as children already connect due to the TV series. These aren't negative comments but suggestions. We had a great time and look forward to returning. All the very best, David

17th May 2015:

Definitely the nicest bunkhouse I've ever stayed in!

Tips:

Stock up with food at the shop, and use that excellent kitchen. Head for the beaches, it's all walkable/bikeable, the animals are friendly, and people will offer you lifts. My favourite place was Sorisdale at the end of the road top right. But check the boat times on the day, when you want to leave.

I question the long term provision of 6 bed mixed dormitories. Our experience in New Zealand in 2011 was that most backpacker providers were offering more and more double rooms and converting dormitories. Sharing a dormitory with uinknown persons/snorers is not a joy. Your kitchen and lounge are superb. Not having a TV licence is good. SHowers are excellent

10th May 2015:

Coll is a place you have to want to come to, not a place you pass through like so many places on the mainland. Having said that, it is easily walkable from the ferry and to the shops. The welcome was so warm! This is one of the best bunkhouses that I have been to! As an Outdoorlads member I have been to so many bunkhouses/hostels around the UK. It is so comfortable and the kitchen is really good. When things were missing understandable when An-Cridhe is nearby, the matter was attended to really quickly. Coll is a place you come to to relax, walk and take in the view. A brilliant place to stay.

Tips:

Ask about the local fishermen who can supply Lobster, Langoustine and Crab. Really well priced and all of it straight out of the sea!

20th April 2015:

The place is cracking; clean, spacious, close to the ferry port. The building looks great too, it's a nice piece of design. You get a real sense of the architecture with how clean and uncluttered the place is but making sure that the small day to day maintenence jobs are tackled too (holes left behind by the toilet roll holders or the need to re-do silicone sealant etc) is important as it encourages the user to take more care using the design, its spaces and facilities.

Warm informality at its best modern without being charmless. Thanks for lending my friend the bicycle.our plans would have been scuppered otherwise.try and keep the laminated "do and don't" signs to a necessary minimum. They are my personal bugbear. Thanks for the easter concert. Great fun

Go to at least one beach Make the sacrifice and eat once at the hotel

8th February 2015:

We stayed at the bunkhouse for five nights in February on our first trip to Coll. We have stayed at many bunkhouses and hostels over the years, and the facilities at Coll definitely come out tops. Everything is top spec, and the welcome from the bunkhouse team and from everyone in the village was exceptionally warm and friendly. It truly is a first class facility, and an Island and people to match. Thank you!! John and Alison

Tips:

It goes without saying - enjoy the Coll beaches, the wildlife and the sunsets!! A night at the Caledonian Hotel in Oban is a great way to start the holiday (very reasonably priced, and the feature rooms overlooking the harbour are good), and then catch the early ferry over to Coll for a few days!!

Beautiful, modern bunkhouse right in the centre of town. All the amenities you need, comfortable; in short, absolutely perfect. My only criticism would be that it was a bit chilly in winter, but I'm sure that in summer time it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Tips:

Go to Burns night. You won't regret it.

It is a fantastic facility - congratulations must go to all those involved from the conception to completion

Tips:

If you use this PLEASE look after it - it is a gem - walking is great - if you want to walk then politely decline the likely lift that will be offered you - the village of Arinagour has most of your needs - you don't need to take loads of food with you

26th November 2014:

Super facilities, both in the Bunkhouse and neighbouring Community Centre. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful - lots of info re things to do on the island (great for short-trippers!). Thanks to all the team....I'll be back... Just one thing - could do with a light between Bunkhouse and Comm. Centre for dark nights (I know, I should have had a torch!) - also if path could be continued across grass area to connect up with driveway...

Tips:

No transport except for (hired) bike or Shanks' pony if you don't have a car...I thought there'd be a post bus...! Village store well stocked and reasonably priced, too. Shop by cafe has wonderful wholefoods (and lots more!) & Post Office sells so much more than stamps...! Petrol around £1.52. Beaches fantastic...I loved the one in the north not far from the burial ground - beautiful. But then - it all is.
