Just fantastic! What a find in Bute, we will definitely be back, so sad to leave. It was like living in a show house.

Tips:

Where do we start, you must take time to visit the beaches. Scalpsie and Etterick Bay, the farmers market in Bute Brewery, on all day till 8 at night! The Pavillion restaurant for huge portions of homely cooking, which seems to be the locals secret eating place. Gillies which is part of the Victoria hotel for a friendly relaxed meal. You'll have to put book of you want to eat at The Black Bull pub. So many places to sight see.

24th April 2024:

You provide very tasteful and comfortable accommodation with spectacular views and thoughtful extra touches. Communication is great. We were confident that our host would be nearby should we have any questions during our stay. The very easy access to the apartment was appreciated as was provision of bread, cereals, juice, spreads and yoghurt to start our day.

Tips:

Bute without a car is remarkably easy when theYou really the bus service is so reliable. The 24 hour mobile bus ticket, booked via the West Coast Motors app is great value. You can enjoy several different places within a day such as Kilchattan Bay, Ettrick Bay, port Bannatyne and Mount Stuart. When visiting the latter, it’s good to checkon their website if they have any closures due to special events. The bus provides an almost door-to door service. You can visit St Blaine’s Chapel by getting off the bus at The Kingarth Hotel and walking up the hill, then turning left down Plan Road/Lane. The Anchor Tavern in Port Ballantine had live music on Thursday nights and menus are available to order in food.

Great place to stay, very helpful host. We were in Suite 4, bed was fine, but the day bed in the lounge was not comfortable for sitting. However, there are other suites with different layouts. One small point, we found the sink and shower drained very slowly.

Lovely second floor suites with great view. Well equipped and spotless. Good communication from owner.Only issue was TV.it is really small and hard to see. Probably not a problem for summer visitors but for us it was. Would recommend the suites and would definitely return.

Tips:

Rothesay is severely lacking in restaurants. Town is very run down. Shops are not really that interesting. Shame because Rothesay has a lot of visitors looking for a bit more going on.

We have stayed at the Boathouse Super Suites lots of times now over the past few years. The cleanliness of the suites is outstanding and the continental breakfast foods are brilliant also. You’d never need to buy anything for your breakfast there’s always plenty of choice. The views from the rooms are outstanding. We always recommend the Boathouse Super Suites to anyone we talk to and a few of our friends have visited also. Thank you Sara and Pat you are always welcoming and you keep everything in immaculate condition. Wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Tips:

On our recent visit we’ve eaten at the Black Bull and the food was excellent. We also went to the Ettrick Bay cafe on Saturday for our 3 course Christmas dinner which was absolutely delicious and so worth the visit. There’s always Mount Stuart to visit or there’s a lot of independent local shops with beautiful different things to purchase.

Dear Sara Myself and Anna had the most perfect stay at The Boat House. 5 star accommodation, every single attention to detail was unbelievable. For anyone visiting Bute that wants the comfort of a hotel with the luxury of being able to make snacks with the kitchen facilities in the room this is just perfect. Beautifully stocked fridge on arrival with yogurt, milk, juice along with jams and butter. Not to mention the jars of cereals and coffee/teas etc. I can’t say enough about the Boat House Sara, really top notch standard.

Tips:

Our trip included a drive around the island, beautiful walks at Scalpsie beach. Lunch in the Kettledrum A visit to Bute Yard… amazing, filled with local produce and gifts. A trip to Bute Woollen Mills for their sample sale. Well worth it. Rothesay Castle of course is a must. Not to mention the gorgeous gift shops, purchased Bute candles, all named after local beaches. Fresh walks along the sea front followed by a few drinks in the Taverna and Macs Bar.

I actually booked 3 rooms. The other two being for my friends. I've stayed at the Boathouse previously and it's fabulous. Big spacious rooms, great views, spotlessly clean and handy for local amenities. My friends were very impressed too, that much they've vowed to return.

Tips:

There are many places to visit; Kilchattan Bay is lovely and a nice scenic drive. Ettrick Bay is also beautiful and the coffee shop there is very nice. There are a number of restaurants and takeaway establishments on the island where the food is very good.

Awww, so sorry!! What a day that was, a full house clean for a wedding coming in, and a quick visit to the sweetest podiatrist to oversee the sweary son's 'toe of doom'. The boathouse was a fantastic base for us as we went on a holiday with extended family all staying at the same accommodation. Excellent suites and facilities, and the breakfast starter pack went down a treat. Lovely host Sara, available when needed. We felt it was excellent value for money.

Tips:

Enjoyed the city sight seeing tour bus. Mount Stuart was very impressive with informative guides. Ettrick Bay with its stunning beach was a lovely day out make sure to go to the tea room, we made it in time for a full Scottish breakfast. We would recommend the Sea Dragon, Peking and Cantonese cuisine if you fancy a takeaway, the portion sizes are huge!! And the lovely ladies behind the counter told us to pop in the pub next door for a drink while we waited and they delivered it to us in there! Fantastic service.

The suite was very clean and in a great location - handy for the centre of town and with spectacular views across Rothesay bay. The breakfast supplies and cooking facilities meant that we had everything we needed for breakfast each day.

This is the FIFTH stay I’ve had at The Boat House. Such a great location, the suites are a real home from home. Great to have the kitchen facilities and Sara also provides you with items for breakfast which is much appreciated. Everything is always spotless and the showers have brilliant pressure 🙂. Totally loved just gazing out the window at the ferries passing by and the beautiful sunsets❤️ Sara is so lovely and friendly. There is a folder with information on restaurants and much more. Already looking forward to next time!

Tips:

Places to visit…Stuart House, Ettrick Bay, Scalpsie Bay, The Bute Museum. If you like walking, The Kilchattan Circular is always a favourite with us but walking shoes a must! Eating Out…now this is the tricky part. Plenty cafes for during the day if going for lunch. Helmis, The Diner, Ettrick Bay Tea room great. If going for dinner, I’d advise booking ahead. We had a nice dinner at The Black Bull Inn.

Beautiful apartment with amazing view. Everything had been thoughtfully prepared from the generous breakfast to the cosy dressing gowns. Sara was welcoming, helpful and responded promptly to my questions before we arrived. We will hope to stay again next time we are in Rothesay.

Tips:

We enjoyed the walk from Kilchattan Bay to St Blane's chapel, (and the tea room on our return!) Scalpsie beach was beautiful. Roads were quiet and great for cycling with amazing views.

Lovely accommodation with million dollar views. The place is spotless and a relaxing stay away from the city. Sara is very friendly and always up for a good chat

Tips:

Excellent place for fresh air and lot’s of walking Unfortunately I feel the town could do with some good restaurants that are open slightly later. We did however visit The Black Bull,The Kingarth and The Kettledrum for dinner and very pleased with the food and reasonably priced. Beautiful island however The Council could do with spending some money on Rothesay town centre. Overall the island and town have great potential but a bit more effort from residents and Council required

Mount Stewart is a must. Colintraive Hotel for lunch. Been going to Bute for 30+ years and just discovered Loch Fad. We were lucky and seen an Osprey. All the wee shops are great got some bargains. Gifts in the winter gardens, and The Green. Delicious coffee in Bonnie Bling and best fish n chips from the West End chippie. Rothesay you have a piece of my heart xx

The Airbnb was absolutely superb. Perfect location next to the water looking out at the bay with breathtaking views, and within walking distance of the town. Our host, Sara, was fantastic, exceptionally warm and welcoming with a great sense of humour. She was quick to answer our questions and help us when needed. We'll absolutely stay there again when we're next in Bute.

Tips:

If you enjoy exploring independent coffee shops, I highly recommend Isle of Bute Coffee @Bonnie Bling. If you need a fast and reliable taxi service, use J and J Zan-Kreyser Taxis. For glorious pubs within a short driving distance along the coast, Kingarth Hotel is spot on.

The Suites were well presented and comfortable with beautiful views over the Kyles of Bute . The host dealt with a couple of issues we had promptly and pleasantly . Nothing was too much bother .The Suites are a short walk from the town centre . Also there are pleasant walks along the sea front with ample space and many seats for the elderly ! Visitors and locals obviously enjoy evening walks and dog exercising .

Tips:

My highlight was Mount Stuart although they had internet issues when we tried to book our visit Extensive gardens and first Million pound house built in 1800s . We mainly self catered partly because 2 of the tripadvisor recommended eateries had closed permanently . Had a lovely snack/lunch at Ambience and lovely ice creams at Zoe's . CalMac ferries ran perfectly and local Bute people were very friendly and helpful . Lots of cyclists and hikers and Bute would suit self catering travellers . Also took the Colintraive ferry to Cowal Peninsula which was frequent service and 5 minute trip . Scenery on Island and Cowal was of excellent quality although fabric of both both have obviously suffered with the loss of business due to pandemic .

Beautiful and comfortable suite in a fantastic location. Loved the view from the bay window, and strolling along the promenade right from the door. The breakfast was very nice, and the shower was excellent. The only slight criticism was that the TV screens were small and too high to watch comfortably, but to be honest we preferred to watch the ferries coming and going and the seabirds. Thanks for a lovely relaxing stay.

Tips:

Rothesay is lovely, but is unfortunately very limited in decent places to eat - hopefully this will improve. There are several lovely bays on the island for strolling, especially at low tide, and Mount Stuart is a must. It was great seeing the seals at Scalpsie Bay.

Ownere Sarah lived in next door property she is very helpful and friendly. We really enjoyed our stay in room 2 ground floor, e palce was spotless, suite very spacious, decor very tasteful. Large firm bed, lovely bathroom with shower. Despite no cooker we managed fine with microwave. private outdoor seating at front wonderful view over water to mainland, can sit and relax, in or outdoors, to watch passing ferries arriving and departing.

Tips:

5-10 minute walk into town. If intending to stay during Week you may find some of resturants closed in evenings or closing at 8pm, our stay was the beginning of May Sun-Thurs, managed with a wee bit of planning. Mid season there may be better opening times ? Enejoyed our day trips to the numerous bays around Isle of Bute.

Absolutely loved our stay at The Boathouse Suites. The location is perfect, the view from the windows are spectacular. The host is on call 24/7 should you need her, she is extremely friendly and helpful. My only suggestion would be to put in an oven/hob to the suites to really make it a fully functioning self catering kitchen. However, I appreciate there are probably further health and safety regulations associated with doing this.

Tips:

Visit; Ettrick Bay and eat some delicious homemade cakes at the cafe, Scalpsie Bay to see the seals, Kingarth Hotel to enjoy yummy food and play pool and finally go on a tour around Mount Stuart.

Hiya! Thanks for the review. I'm really glad you enjoyed your stay with us. You are correct in the assumption that we can't add cookers or ovens as it would require over £150k worth of fire cladding! This is an exceptional apartment. You feel like you are the first visitor. It is newly decorated and bright and clean. It has the most beautiful view to both left and right and you have the joy of seeing the little ferry passing to and fro at all hours of the day. A very generous breakfast is provided in the well appointed kitchen. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated and provide not only soft plush bed robes but a little animal hot water bottle for those tired after their journey. The host is a wonderful friendly responsive woman who will answer your every need. What else can I add? Go find out for yourself!

Tips:

Rothesay : old Victorian buildings/ 1920s Pavilion / promenade Kingarth Hotel for good pub food at outdoor tables Ettrick Bay : astoundingly beautiful long sandy beach with clear waters and little cafe that serves ice cream shakes & Empire biscuits along with scones and other goodies. Kilchattan Bay : red sand Scalpsie Bay : seals ( tho we didn't see any ) Rhubodach Ferry : top of island : three point turn and you're on mainland. Apparently good drive back on mainland. Cheaper fare....

5 out of 5 for all points regarding location facilities, cleanliness and staff. The boathouse really is a lovely place to base yourself for your stay on bute . We found the beds to be very comfortable and the pier view living/dining area to be a lovely bonus due to the views across the bay. Sara and her staff deserve all the praise that comes their way for running such a wonderful place .

Tips:

Things to see , a trip round the island on the open top bus is very interesting and entertaining , letting passengers learn a little bit of the history of bute , also to let them see some of the beautiful bays etc . Harry Haws , Bonny Clyde , kingarth Hotel to name just a few are places where great food is served . Not forgetting rothesay's very own electric bakery which is always great for delicious breakfasts pasties pies sandwiches and light lunches also ettrick bay tea room who have a wide range menu including delicious home made soups . All pubs including the golfers the taverna, the Black bull, the galatea the islander are very welcoming to visitors. The locals are always good for a wee chat and a good laugh.

Very comfortable accommodation, immaculate and always a friendly welcome from Sara who will make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your stay on Bute.

Tips:

Visit Kingarth Hotel for lunch or dinner. Local bus stops right outside. Enjoy a sail on the Waverley when it calls into Rothesay on a Wednesday and sails up the Kyles of Bute to Tarbert. Either spend some time in Tarbert or stay on for a cruise around Loch Fine before returning to Tarbert and back to Rothesay. Stunning views and a great day out.

We were very pleased with this find. Just a few minutes walk from the ferry so particularly good for foot passengers, although parking also looked OK. The kitchen area was a clever idea - nice to have a relaxed breakfast. Fantastic view, comfortable and stylish furniture. A warm welcome and although we did not need any help we could hear that this was gladly offered if needed. We look forward to returning.

Tips:

Not too many restaurants, but the ones we got to (Harry Haws and the chippy) were good. Great ebike hire. Good bus service & good idea to get the app for buying tickets on your phone in advance.

Thanks for another great stay. Absolutely love the Boathouse Suites. Already thinking about returning around the same time in 2023 as part of a further Scottish adventure. Sorry we missed you Sara when departing early on Monday. After seeing the chaos of trying to leave on the ferry on the Sunday, opted to get the 8.05am boat to avoid any potential delays. The great weather was a massive bonus too.

Tips:

Harry Haws and the Bonnie Clyde are good dining places, as is the Bistro in Port Bannatyne. Check out the beer garden at the Galetea too on a warm day. Take the bus to Etterick Bay to enjoy the beach and visit Mount Stuart too.

Very good, comfortable accommodation; very convenient for Rothesay town centre; lovely view. Host very helpful and accommodating. One of (if not the only?) accessible holiday suites on the island - as my wife is disabled.

Tips:

Good local restaurants that we tried and found very good: Harry Haw's, The Kettledrum and Helmi's (lovely cakes, to eat in or take away). Also, The Ettrick Bay Cafe served good food (salads very good/generous), ice creams, etc. Must visit Mount Stuart house and grounds. House very interesting; room guides very helpful/knowledgeable. Pity that the large grounds were not all accessible with a wheelchair. They ought to have one or two trampers/mobility scooters to hire - like most National Trust venues, etc have. But nice/pretty island - worth visiting.

We have stayed previously in The.Boat House and the standard and comfort are wonderful. Everything was thought of to make our stay so good..amazing comfortable beds…huge shower with lovely big towels… breakfasts were superb ..even little jars of jam and marmalade were thought of..as well as yoghurt and orange juice…coffee and various types of tea…. These apartments have to be booked well in advance as they are so popular…very telling of the exceptional standard.

Tips:

Due to lockdown not every restaurant and eatery were open during our recent stay..although Zavaroni fish and chip shop was open 7 days… Kettle Drum is excellent but only open a few days. We always take home loads of stuff from Electric Bakers..and there is a wonderful butcher where we buy stuff and an amazing fruit snd veg shop with high quality products. It’s close to Rothesay town itself. With restaurants and bars. Also plenty of places to go for a coffee. For ladies in need of a wee bit Retail Therapy. There’s a few individual boutiques which is great. Plenty of places to visit in the summer time. Sara has plenty of information in the Suites. We were lucky to be in Rothesay in the summer when the weather was scorching. Plenty to see and do at your own pace. We’re just home after a 3/night stay with friends. Were lucky again with the weather. Time just flew by.

Immaculate property with views to die for. Lovely old building with modern touches. Breakfast supplied and was plentiful. Very popular so book in advance to avoid disappoint. We will definitely be back. Thanks Sara and family.

Tips:

Mount Stuart house and gardens a must. Seen it on tv but in real life it took my breath away. Went to Colintraive Hotel for lunch. Was delicious. Westend cafe for a fish tea. Fish huge and tasty and Harry Haws for burger yum. Book table for Harrys as was fully booked when we wanted to go so got them to deliver. Bute has a piece of my heart so will always love.

It was my first visit but certainly won’t be my last.

Tips:

The West Island Way walk is well worth doing. I broke it down into three manageable sections with great advice from the staff in The Discovery Centre. First impressions of the apartment were that it was clean tidy and very modern. That coupled with Sara the host being very genuine, welcoming and happy to accommodate any questions we had, made our stay excellent. The groceries given to us on arrival was a lovely touch and much appreciated. It was our first holiday with my baby son and the fact that he could see every boat, aeroplane, bus and motorbike from our bay window thrilled him more than words can describe. All in all my partner, my son and I had an excellent break on a lovely island hosted by a lovely woman. I will definitely recommend and be back in the future.

Tips:

We went to Etterick bay as it had the best beach and a lovely little tea room. Rothsey itself was a nice place to walk around. In terms of places to eat, The Kettledrum had lovely staff and decent food and was at the end of the same street the apartment was on. Harry Haws was also good but booking in advance is a must.

Tips:

The island is beautiful for sightseeing and cycling but we did find it difficult to access a choice of good restaurants as there are very few available. thank you! I can't have cookers as it changes your fire regulations in the house and I can't afford the £100k it would cost to alter the house to do so. (I checked) I don't provide cafetieres as when I did, the drainage got blocked with the coffee grinds that kept going down the sinks! Old houses and old drains.... But the instant coffee I provide is a good quality. the island has been hit hard with covid as you can imagine and we are trying to find our feet. we hope the renewed interest in Bute may encourage more folk to come and invest and stay here, and maybe open more restaurants! was good to meet you all. x

Our suite was perfect for our three-day stay on Bute. The living/kitchen area and its bay window gave a great view of the bay so a nice place to relax when we were not exploring the island. The bed was comfy and the shower good. Bedroom and bathroom weren't huge but didn't need to be as, the rest of the suite was airy. Sara had provided a basic "starter pack" breakfast so we could settle in with a cup of tea as soon as we arrived. Self catering facilities were sufficient (microwave and toaster but no cooker). Fabulous space so sleek and clean yet still welcoming and cosy. Loved the views and the central location was perfect with plenty parking. Great cafes for lunch and the coop for all snacks drinks and goodies ! No freezer box so perhaps the addition of an ice bucket with a lid so a bag of ice could be popped into the fridge.. we found a wee plastic bucket for ice and used that to top up our G&Ts! Not many eating places in an evening but we could rustle up baked potatoes & light snack. We also used the West End chippy and it was delicious. Thank you we left feeling recharged and relaxed. We brought jigsaws... perhaps

Very welcoming and friendly, lovely lady xx

Tips:

The town is undergoing a fair bit of transformation, plenty of independent retailers. Harry Haws, serves a good variety of bistro style meals. The Kettle drum Cafe is a traditional style cafe, spotlessly clean and a varied menu. Ettrick Bay is beautiful, and if you want a game of golf Rothesay golf is worth a visit. The view's are stunning, but be warned it is hilly.

Everything about my stay worked well thank you. My only suggestion for an improvement is to supply a couple of more microwaveable containers, although I had brought my own anyway. It was great that you complied with my request for gluten free bread and lactose free milk and spread.

Tips:

The circular Kilchattan walk has some spectacular views and a large variety of walking terrain. It's a bit like doing a tour of a mini Scotland in an afternoon. Advise wearing hillwalking boots for this walk as parts are a bit tricky underfoot but well worth the effort. The island has lots of interesting small shops that are a delightful change from the large shopping chains on the mainland. Craigmore Bowls Club has a wonderful location, a beautiful green and very friendly and hospitable members. The Rothesay Museum is packed with interesting info and exhibits. Bute has a lot of history and local ancient sites.

Tips:

In terms of food, Harry Haw's is the place to go. For a curry, Meeka at the India Pavillion really knows his stuff - don't be put off by the less than palatial exterior. For things to do, if your fit take the bus to Kilchattan Bay and walk back to Rothesay via the West Island Way.

Owner Response:

Thanks for the review Sarah. I agree the loo is a bit tight, the wonders of trying to fit ensuites into old houses, but I went for a decent size shower instead. The reason we can't have cookers is due to fire regulations, and we'd have to completely overhaul the house to meet those standards. However, next time hopefully more places will be open for meals then, and you can treat yourself and not have to cook! Sara x

Would highly recommend the Boathouse Suites. Excellent accommodation and decorated to a very high standard. Kitchen area within Suite which is ideal if you wish to make your own lunch. To be honest you won't find better on the Isle of Bute.

Tips:

We ate at Kingarth Hotel, Kettledrum Cafe and would have eaten at Harry Haw's had it been open for 'sit ins', takeaway only just now. Because our weather was good we had great days out at Ettrick Bay, Kilchattan Bay and planned to visit my favourite Scalspie Bay but had to forfeit that visit because the Ferry was only allowing a certain amount of cars/passengers so had to be in queue early to make sure we got on. This may change in Phase 4.

The suite was beautifully designed, decorated and appointed - absolutely perfect for a quiet escape. The low key way in which our welcome, access etc was managed was lovely. We particularly appreciated the stunning view and the excellent standard of cleanliness. It might be a nice addition if a cafetière were available in the kitchen. The only other thing we might mention, is that there seemed to be something not quite right with the mattress - it was fine on the side by the window, but the side nearest the kitchen was pretty uncomfortable. Everything else was really super!
