Maurice and Steve are gracious hosts and made us feel very welcome during our stay, it was really like a home away from home. The food was amazing and the lounge with the fireplace so cozy we never wanted to go up to bed!

Tips:

We were in the area to explore Campbeltown whisky, however, if you are visiting to explore the area and enjoy the peace and tranquility, be aware it is quite a remote rural area, so best advised to plan meals and activities carefully and well in advance!

Maurice and Steve are the ‘A’ team when it comes to hospitality. Dinner, bed and breakfast were served with warmth, humour, with high standard at its heart. Accommodation was immaculately clean, beautifully appointed, and finished to a high standard. A Victorian manse brought back to life with refinement and class. Our hosts made us feel very much at home and comfortable. With ready local knowledge and recommendations we were able to maximise on the very best of Kintyre. Steve is a time served chef, passionate about food, bringing his flare and talent to the table, talking through his dishes insights and inspiration. This was a wonderful experience food wise sampling homemade and locally sourced dishes under Steve’s heartfelt guidance. This was a five star experience in its self. These generous hosts are an example of the hospitality industry par excellence! We feel very fortunate to have had this wonderful experience and look forward to future visits with more investigation into Mull of Kintyre hidden gems. Well done gents, you deserve every success. Toni & Ann

Tips:

A lesser know part of Scotland perhaps, but a hidden gem nonetheless. Glad to have discovered before the secret is out ! Beautiful coastline with stunning beaches, quaint fishing villages. Friendly folk. No wonder McCartney was so inspired and passionate about the Mull of Kintyre. Definitely worth the effort to take the ‘long, long winding road’……

We enjoyed a delightful getaway at Carradales, the entertaining hosts left nothing to chance ensuring our stay was all we’d hoped for and more. From the welcoming pot of tea on our earlier than expected arrival, the freshly picked roses on our dressing table, to the tailored menus highlighting fresh, local produce and chef Stephen’s skill, we were made to feel spoiled and special. A pleasant chat with Morris our host and locals from the village by a fire in the sitting room topped off a wonderful stay. Thank you so much!

We just finished a four night stay at the carradale's house. It was absolutely fabulous. Steve and Maurice are the most committed hosts to their craft that we as a group of five have ever experienced. It's honestly like having your own private chef and top notch concierge during your stay. They both kept us laughing and entertaining and went out of their way to make sure everything about our trip was first class. The house is lovely and the rooms are well appointed. The food and wine selection and evening cocktails were wonderful. Honestly can't say enough good about the experience. We hope to return. Thank you for a great trip gentlemen!

Absolutely FABULOUS!!! Carradales is one of the best guest houses we have ever stayed in! Maurice & Steve were so very welcoming. They came to greet us as we pulled in, took our luggage upstairs and offered us refreshments on arrival. The rooms were spotless and very tastefully decorated. Ours had a lovely view over the garden. The food was AMAZING and obviously lovingly cooked by Steve. who took a great pride in explaining his menus. Staying here was such a great experience and one which we would love to repeat. Thoroughly recommend if you are in the area.

Absolutely lovely guest house, a good location for traveling around Kintyre. Chef Steve and Maurice were very welcoming and informative. The food was wonderful, guest room was very comfortable, and sitting room well appointed and also quite comfortable.

Tips:

A short walk to the Carradale beach is a must and an easy drive to Saddell beach is worth the drive. Taking the Springbank whiskey (in Campbelltown) is a good option as is driving to the Southend and walking the dunes and beach of Machrihanish Dunes Golf course.

26th June 2023:

Steve and Maurice are delightful hosts, they do everything and more to make your stay with them relaxing and enjoyable. Nothing is too much trouble, they really take such pride in what they do. Steve obviously enjoys providing excellent meals, almost everything is home-made, he has worked in several top restaurants, and is always open to suggestion should you have specific requests. Maurice , as front of house, ensures their guests lack for nothing. Carradales is a stunning manse, Steve and Maurice have radically updated it into a four bedroom guest house, in a calm and peaceful location. The antiques and furnishings are extremely tasteful , with much eye to detail , rooms are tastefully furnished and immaculate, and want for nothing. We are already planning another, longer stay!

Tips:

Carradales is set not far from a pretty village, twenty minutes north of Campbeltown. A beach is within walking distance, there is a small golf course, a walk round it provides lovely views. The Post Office as you approach Carradales is very useful, and provides much more than stamps! A walk down to Saddell beach nearby is a must, think McCartney’s song ‘Mull of Kintyre ‘, plus the Anthony Gormley figure. Saddell Abbey ruins are very atmospheric. The road to Campbeltown is McCartney’s ‘ Long and Winding Road’ . Campbeltown, though not large, has several classy gift shops, coffee shops, hotels and restaurants, the museums are very worthwhile, and explain the history of the port, and the status of Campbeltown as the whisky ‘capital ‘ . A gem is the recently renovated Art Deco cinema, £6.50 on Wednesday with a free tea or coffee ! Worth looking in there to see how it was renovated. Several golf courses, the star being Macrihanish, with its legendary first hole, and very new and attractive clubhouse. A drive around the whole peninsula affords spectacular views and scenery. In the very, south, Southdown is quite different, different beaches, caves etc. Your hosts are a mine of information too, especially as they are very well integrated into the community, even though they have only been at Carradales for a few years.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay with Maurice and Steve and were made to feel extremely welcome. The food cooked by Steve uses local ingredients and is interesting and innovative. Smoked salmon scotch eggs and curry and mango chutney bread were firsts for us but absolutely delicious. Our room and the bed in particular were very comfortable and being able to sit outside for tea on arrival - homemade cake of course - and pre dinner drinks were again another first in Scotland. We look forward to a return visit and would highly recommend a stay.

Tips:

We would recommend a trip to Gigha. A 20 minute ferry ride from Tayinloan on the other side of the peninsula. Well marked out walking routes, lovely local ice cream and lunch at the Boathouse is highly recommended.

Very entertaining and engaged hosts! Maurice (front of house) couldn’t do enough to keep us involved, in conversation and on point in the property and Steve (chef) was clearly very committed to his culinary skills and inventive menus! Something for everyone and some things for the more adventurous.

Tips:

Great base for exploring Mull of Kintyre. From gin tasting and ‘school’ locally at Torrisdale Castle Estate (Kintyre Gin) to whisky flights at Glen Scotia and Springburn distilleries (book warehouse tasting through Cadenheads Campbeltown and you won’t be disappointed). Take a walk across the causeway to Davaar Island - low tide only of course. Tarbert harbour is pretty and there’s the ferry to Islay and Jura and so on!

4th May 2023:

I couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate my 60th birthday. It’s a beautiful building, comfortable traditional feeling yet with all the “mod cons”. The location is excellent - lovely strolling distance to a beautiful beach and lots of other walks for which a really helpful map is provided by the hosts. Which brings me on to the fabulous Maurice and Steve! From the initial warm welcome to the hugs on departure they were an absolute joy - great conversation and the thoughtfulness and care shown was wonderful. I’ve deliberately not mentioned the food yet - maybe just to tease Steve a bit! And maybe because I’m running out of superlatives. Utterly delicious, lots of local and seasonal produce and often with little twists that added the “wow factor”. All round fabulous place to stay - we will be back!

Tips:

Walk down to the beach - especially in the evening. Take a trip to Gigha. Check out the tides carefully then walk out to the tidal island of Davaar. Stay in and drink whiskey by the open log fire in the lounge. Most importantly of all - check if the house special breakfast omelette is on and if so order it for every morning!

The service was exemplary. I doubt you would find anything better in the whole of Scotland. As hosts both Maurice and Steve showed a friendliness and an attentiveness that would be very hard to beat. They made us feel so welcome and at ‘home’ that we were very sad to leave and I can say with certainty that we will be back again next year. I should perhaps mention that the food was indeed fantastic and I doubt it could be beaten even in the most expensive restaurants.

Tips:

Carradale and the surrounding area is both beautiful and unspoilt, as is much of Argyll. The tip here is not to plan too much yourself but ask Steve for the annotated map he provides and work through his suggestions. You may have to stay a week to cover the suggestions on the map!

Great atmosphere with cheerful friendly proprietors Maurice and Steve who went the extra mile to ensure our stay was enjoyable and pleasant. The house had clearly been renovated and decorated to a high standard and the room facilities were good. Steve (the Chef) produced excellent meals and in particular, prepared special dishes for my wife who is lactose intolerant ~ that was very much appreciated and something she doesn’t always get to enjoy elsewhere. We will certainly return next time we are in the area!

You are made to feel right at home as soon as you arrive. The hosts certainly make it a 5 plus rating; friendly, informative and entertaining. Food was full of flavour and although imaginative not over fussy. The beds, the roll top bath, and the roaring log fire all make for a totally relaxing stay

Tips:

Check tide times before heading out for walks. For evening meals 'stay in' rather than head out.

The location and quality of the accommodation are excellent, particularly the comfortable beds and the use of the very pleasant lounge to sit and read/enjoy a drink. No single factor outweighs the truly five star hospitality and welcome offered by our hosts who will certainly make your stay feel very special.

Tips:

As the holiday season gets under way there will be more to do in the vicinity. My advice is to dine in Carradales, you are unlikely to find better food elsewhere. The Bluebird Tearoom nearby was of very high quality too.

Good information about things to do from Steve and we will definitely come back as two days definitely wasn't long enough. If you like walks and peace and quiet it is wonderful.

Our stay at Carradales was just brilliant. Steve and Maurice go out of their way to make guests feel relaxed and at home in their beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean boutique hotel. Steve is a fab chef and his seafood dishes are to die for. He does not stint on portion size either, so make sure you take a healthy appetite with you! Cannot recommend Carradales enough. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Tips:

Don't miss out on a visit to Saddell Bay, Torrisdale Castle and Campbeltown itself. If you are looking for a game of golf, Machrihanish is a great course as is Dunaverty. The Ugadale hotel has a small spa and offers a range of treatments all reasaonably priced. If food is your thing, eat at Carradales every night if you can. Very warm welcome from Maurice and Steve. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Food was amazing and for a relatively small B&B the choices of meals was fantastic. Rooms were very clean and tidy, as were the communal areas and dining/lounge areas. The quality of the establishment is testament to the fantastic attention to detail, which was obvious throughout. Really enjoyed our few days. Thank you.

Tips:

Ideally placed tor day trips to Arran (Brodick Castle is a must) and Gigha especially, as well as for many of the more local attractions on Kintyre. Car transport is essential to get the most out of your stay, although Kintyre is a great place for both walking and cycling. A haven for wildlife lovers with golden eagles, hawks and seals being the more unusual.

We have just had 3 nights at Carradales and enjoyed every minute of it. We live in Ayrshire but came to Kintyre from Arran. Never heard of the Guest House which I would say was equally as good if not better than a 5 star hotel. Maurice and Steve welcomed us with a lovely cup of tea in the lounge.. As there were only 4 couples there we enjoyed our dinner and then were pleased to chat with other guests over a coffee or a nightcap or both.

Tips:

We did not visit other restaurants as the food was so delicious and beautifully presented. When choosing Menu for dinner or breakfast we were told exactly what we were going to receive. We had a coffee out and snack at lunchtime, knowing we would be served in the evening with exceptional dinner. We visited Campbeltown and a Gin distillery and slowly wandered around and down to the harbour at Carradale

Stephen and Maurice made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and throughout our stay. We really enjoyed the breakfasts and dinners but had to work up good appetites to manage the generous portions! The whole house has been sympathetically furnished and decorated to a high standard and in keeping with the period for the original manse but with modern twists. The open fire and log burner in the lounge and dining room were much appreciated given the weather outside. Highly recommended.

Tips:

We were fortunate to be able to try Number 42 in Campbeltown which was in its first week of opening. Great tasting fish, a good atmosphere and reasonable value for money. Carradale has a lovely large beach and is well connected with many paths with good signposts. Bring a pair of binoculars too to see the bird life. There is no longer a fuel station in Carradale so keep an eye on your tank...

There's a family atmosphere here, but sometimes you have to think on your feet! The victuals are faultless, though Steve sometimes offers daunting plates and you kick yourself for being unable to finish everything. His dishes are very imaginative and his recipes flexible. He and Maurice have created a lovely home of which they are very proud and to which they clearly enjoy welcoming guests. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with them in spite of the weather.

Tips:

Carradale's attraction lies in its isolation: don't come here if you want to stand too close to people on the beach. Do come if you want a mile-long stretch of sand more or less to yourself. It is my favourite beach in the whole world – because I don't like crowds. Maurice and Steve use local produce wherever possible, including the gin (the distillery, five miles away, is worth a visit) and the beer (which is brewed just north of Inverary). The only lunch we had was at the pub at Machrahinish on the opposite side of the peninsula, which was fine.

The E side of Kintyre is beautiful and quiet. Having heard Campbeltown was a bit run down, we were pleasantly surprised by its many small shops, cafes and interesting buildings. The seafood cabin at Skipness is a victim of its own success, and best visited at quiet times, but Skipness is lovely. The walk to Mull of Kintyre lighthouse is most impressive and worth doing, as is Machrihanish beach. In Tarbert, the 'Blue' walk taking in the castle and the hillside beyond has stunning views.

What a jewel. I cannot recommend this gorgeous guest house highly enough. A warm and friendly welcome by the lovely owners and a lovely spotless well equipped room with an incredibly comfortable bed. I had a delicious evening meal and my porridge the next morning was perfect. The drive across to Carradale is one of the prettiest I did on my tour and the area is spectacular. This really is luxury with a genuine concern that everything is perfect.

30th September 2019:

We stayed for a fabulous long weekend at the Carradale Guest House - it is extremely boutique where every little detail has been thought of. The whole place oozes luxury and taste. We stayed in ‘Skipness’ which has a fantastic roll top bath and the comfiest bed we’ve ever stayed in. Steve and Maurice go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. It really is ‘home from home’. Steve’s food is sublime - fresh, local and refreshingly different. The complimentary homemade shortbread in the room was just the best. They both entirely deserve the excellent reviews they have on TripAdvisor. It is a rare place in a beautiful unspoilt area and we are already planning our return - say no more!

Tips:

This is the place to kick back and relax. The scenery is stunning - there are great walks from the Guest House and the beach is a 10 minute walk away. We got the ferry to Gigha which is a lovely island that harks back to a bygone era and has a fantastic fish and seafood restaurant (The Boathouse) - we enjoyed fresh crab and scallops with a chilled bottle of white wine sat outside overlooking the bay, which we’d definitely recommend - call ahead to book though. Steve and Maurice recommended this trip to us, which again goes to show how much they want you to enjoy your stay and get the most out of the local area. To eat at night, options are limited, but we had booked to eat at the Guest House every night and were very glad we did. Locals also eat at the Guest House because it’s the best in the area so it’s nice to be able to meet and have a chat with them over a glass or two.

Steve and Maurice were excellent hosts. Welcoming and friendly. The room we stayed in was stunning (as the other rooms will be). The house is gorgeous. Steve is an excellent chef. His porridge was fab (dare I say better than my dad used to make). My husband had the full breakfast which he said was delicious.

Tips:

We only stayed 1 night. The pub is a 1 minute walk from the BandB. We also walked to the bay through the forest; it is not far. There are other walks you can do and Maurice and Steve will be able to provide maps etc. Book for dinner in Carradales as it looks delicious; we unfortunately missed out on dinner there but will have this next time we stay.

Steve and Maurice were the perfect hosts! Everything about Carradales was wonderful. So relaxing, quiet and tranquil. The only negative for us is that we couldn’t stay longer than one night! We will definitely be back for sure.

Tips:

No need to go any further than Carradales to eat. Steve is a wonderful chef, we had an evening meal that would serve as 5star cuisine. His attention to detail and own recipes was fabulous. Breakfast was certainly worth getting up for too!

13th May 2019:

Carradales is located in the small village of Carradale on the stunning Kintyre peninsula. Carradales is a very special place. We received a warm welcome from Maurice and this warmth and friendly, attentive service continued throughout our stay. The food was outstanding with one-to-one service in the relaxing dining room. My husband’s dietary needs were managed seamlessly with Steve, the chef, discussing what could be adapted or made specially for him when we arrived. The decor is outstanding and the rooms are beautifully fitted out and with the comfiest bed! Relaxing music and real fires add to the peaceful ambience, along with a glass of the local gin. It is only a short walk to the sandy beach. We left Carradales feeling very relaxed and will definitely return in the future. Thank you to Maurice and Steve for looking after us so well.

Tips:

Stunning scenery on the road from Carradale to Campbeltown, with many sandy bays, whilst looking across to the island of Arran. The picturesque village of Tarbert is worth a visit with its harbour and a small selection of places to eat and shops/galleries to visit. If passing through the town of Lochgilphead check out The Smiddy for coffee or lunch. Lovely freshly cooked food and home baking.

Thank you for the warm welcome and hospitality throughout our stay. Our room was luxurious, and appreciated the extra touches (dressing gowns and lovely bluebells). Evening meals and wine list were excellent - thoughtful use of local produce - there was a good choice including specials of the day. Breakfasts were equally delicious. A fantastic guest house in an amazing location.

Tips:

Carradale beach and Kintyre way on the doorstep. Fantastic coast walks. Visit Saddell bay for a wonderfully wild beach and Anthony Gormley sculpture.

I would like to thank Stephen and Morris for their excellent service and providing myself and Rachel with such wonderful place to stay. Rooms were of probably as high a standard as we have stayed in and we have stayed in alot, the evening meals were of a very high standard with alot attention to using the freshest local produce which is a real credit to Stephen. Morris is a wonderful front of house with nothing to much trouble. We felt very much at home at every point. I can't recommend carradales enough. Thanks again from Richard and Rachel and we will see you again in the very near future.

Perfect place to stay for a vacation in lovely Carradale. Wonderful friendly hosts who seem genuinely delighted to have you stay as guests. We arrived on the day they had just been informed by VISIT SCOTLAND that they had been awarded a 5 STAT guest house rating - well deserved given the effort and investment they seem to have put into the guest house !! We had dinner which was terrific / restaurant standard.

Tips:

Forget going anywhere else for dinner, but make sure you book early as they only do small numbers. Excellent freshly prepared local produce. If the weather is good take the short walk to the beautiful beach which has wonderful views across to Arran.

22nd November 2018:

Very welcoming, plenty of parking, bedrooms are beautifully furnished, lighting is perfect - combinations of central, bedside, dressing table and reading lights. High quality furniture all with rounded corners, bed and mattress extremely comfortable, shower was powerful and there were plenty of spare powerpoints. Carradales has an alcohol licence so pre-dinner and post-dinner drinks made with good local products (local gin etc) were much enjoyed. Mine hosts - Maurice and Steve, were very knowledgeable of the area and we visited the new Gin Distillery just a couple of miles away on their recommendation. Both breakfast and Evening Meal were of a very high standard, with a choice of dishes and made with as much local produce as they could source. The lounge was very comfortable with an open fire and it was like a home from home.

Tips:

Gin Distillery at the local Castle, the wooden shed just 100 yards from Carradales serve lovely home made soup and cakes for lunch, Carradale itself has several beaches which are well worth visiting and exploring and the harbour in Carradale is worth a visit.

The welcome by Maurice and Steve was very warm and always attentive and keen to make sure our stay was as enjoyable as possible. The bedroom and facilities was extremely comfortable. The homemade cooking was very good and home cooked with great care by Steve. The menu was a little limited so if staying for more than a couple of days this would be a limitation. The gust house has been operating fora few months and has been fabulous;y refurbished. The stay was very enjoyable.

Tips:

We ate in each night so can't advise other places

Apologies fore the late reply. Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are really happy that you had a lovely stay. The reason why we have 3 starters, 4 main courses and 3 dessert options and most days a daily special is that we only have 10 covers and everything is sourced locally and cooked from fresh which means that we have limited storage space. Our menu changes with the seasons so out now is our Autumn menu. We really hope to welcome you again in the near future to Carradales. Best wishes, Maurice and Steve.

The food was exquisite (the gin mousse worth the trip alone - just don't drive after if you have it!) and the room styling and comfort ideal for us personally. Steven and Maurice are wonderful hosts and provide a personal touch to their service. I hope that Carradales is a resounding success and maintains its popularity throughout the year

Tips:

If you are looking for a quiet location off the beaten track then the village of Carradale (just along the road from the hotel) is ideal. The hotel is remarkably easy to find in our opinion and despite the weather on the date of our trip, located within walking distance of the beach and other walks.

Hello David, first of all let me apologise for not replying to you earlier on this site, an oversight on my part. I just wanted to say a big thank you to you both for taking the time to write your review. As you say we have tried to create the ambience of a home whilst we transformed it into a luxury guest house. Steve is still working his magic with his food creations! When you do return to Carradale we hope that you will stay with us again and as you say combine your stay with a round of golf at Dunaverty, Machrihanish and Carradale Golf courses. Our very best wishes to you. Maurice and Steve.

9th June 2018:

Carradales is an exceptional gem in western Scotland along the “long and winding road” through Kintyre on your way to Campbeltown. Hosts Maurice and Steve do everything in their power to make you feel welcome in this recently-renovated and incredibly luxurious B&B that offers finer accommodations than many 5-Star luxury hotels. If you’re a golfer, Carradales is a short drive from the world famous Machrihanish golf course and the equally challenging but lesser known Carradale course. Steve is an amazing chef. Breakfast is included (try the “Full Scottish”) and a sumptuous dinner is an extra option. Carradales is perfection. Plan on wanting to stay longer than you’ve booked. - Tracy & Bill Moroney
